[bit-tech] Microsoft slashes Windows 10 rollback period

Microsoft has issued an update to its Windows 10 operating system which slashes the time an upgrade user has to roll back the installation from 30 days to 10, in a move it claims has users' storage space requirements in mind.

Source

So you took the upgrade on the final days of the offer, reassured by the GWX nagware that you had 31 days to roll back to Windows 7 / 8.1 (see post #3)? Well, surprise!

The sad part is that Microsoft is getting predictable in their devious tricks:

I was thinking what kind of sleaziness they had reserved for the Anniversary Update, which incidentally is only made available after the ""free" upgrade offer" July 29 deadline. Those who don't keep up with tech news are in for a surprise. What's next? Shortening the time you can revert back to the previous OS to 15 days?

I wonder what else the future® will bring.

It was made a bullet point on several of the GWX redesigns to reassure people that they had 31 days to go back to their previous OS if they wanted to. If they already knew that they were going to reduce it, why didn't they update the GWX nagware to reflect that? People have schedules and made their decisions based on the time they have and the information that was given to them. This is Microsoft changing the rules after the decisions were made.

Edit to add these:

Le sigh. The free update is over. People who made the jump did, and those who didn't, well they didn't. Can't we just ler this Windows 10 hate die and find something else to complain about?

I had to do an update-in-place after the last update as it kept freezing my system past the lock-screen but beyond that I haven't had any real issues. It's more telemetrous (new word, y/w) and process-happy than I'd like but it's the only real game in town for gaming unless that chicken and egg routine with Linux gaming ever tips over.

And those who did move to Windows 10 deserve to know beforehand if one of their reassurances of being able to go back to their previous OS within 31 days is going to be reduced to 10 days with the Anniversary Update, which was incidentally delivered a few days after the free upgrade offer period was over. They updated the GWX nagware so many times over the past year, especially in this last stint, yet they failed to change that bit. You should be defending yourself as a consumer, demanding honest information, but apparently no.

Agreed. The bit about trying to preserve system storage space is particularly funny. They demonstrated that concern after the anniversary update by stuffing an non-deletable (by an average user with little PC knowledge which is the concern here) folder with GB's of data and leaving it sat helpfully eating up storage space. It's okay to leave something forever for reverting to older W10, but heaven forfend you wish to return to 8.1 or what have you.

Exactly. Not to mention when last year GWX downloaded the gigabytes of Windows 10 installation files without asking users or taking their space (or bandwidth and data caps) constraints into consideration.
