[Guru3d] AMD preparing VEGA launch venue - Launch Imminent? - Page 30

Pretty much OCN nowadays, from my perspective as a more active user .

1. NVIDIA rumour, pages of replies.
2. NVIDIA product, pages of replies, benchmarks, numbers, e-leet, e-peen, fanboyism.
3. AMD rumour, pages of replies.
4. AMD article about launching of a product. Pages of replies.
5. AMD article about launching of a product that will launch in 2017.
6. AMD article about launched product. Fanboys disappointed because the hype was over 9000 and some even created their own fantasy novels about the product.
7. NVIDIA launches a product, best quarter ever, AMD fanboys rain on the parade, we got Async Shaders, wait for big Vega.
8. NVIDIA article about 1080 being their most sold car ever.
9. AMD article about the venue of launching a product. 30 pages of speculation, which was already speculated in all of the other AMD article where pretty much nothing was released, excluding the 480 card.

I vote we rename the site to overclock.hype because I have never seen the board become so clingy to speculation and articles that have no tangible proof nor numbers for real comparisons.

AMD has already said it all they have for 2016 is 3 products. This is rx 480, rx 470 and rx460.

Vega need HBM2 to be competitive with Nvidia and the technology isn't mature enough to be used yet.

The best I can see coming out for AMD is a dual variant to the rx480 for 399-499. Basically these vega launches rumors is more guerrilla marketing meant to stall a few more 1080/1070 buyers. AMD been using this technique since maxwell's launch.

In the Enthusiast community it might work once in a while (but rarely) In the mainstream community no one is holding their breath and waiting for AMD. If they want a 1080/1070 as soon as they have the funds its purchased.

I hate to say I agree with @guttheslayer on anything but he's right. AMD needs to be bought out by a very large company with fabs (Samsung we're looking at you) to be able to compete with Nvidia or Intel. I've been saying this for over 3 years now. IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

If you folks don't understand what a faux competitor is I can't help you, but basically it is when a near monopoly keeps a competitor alive only to keep from being regulated or broken up. That's exactly what Nvidia and Intel are doing right now.

I hope AMD does well because any company nearing a monopoly is not good for the customer.

That being said, nvidia simply holds all the cards. Their current architecture is under no pressure from AMD at all. Pascal is simply an evolution of Maxwell and probably has good yields. It's also more power efficient. And it has a significant advantage in performance in most current games where they can calibrate releases to counter what AMD does.

Amd released the 480, the 1060 was positioned to beat it in its price category. They were however forced to price lower than they wanted to (the 1060 has about the same Perf/$ of a gtx 1070 and they want people to buy 1070's).

I see a few outcomes:
  1. Vega is released and competes with the 1070. It'll probably be a little slower in dx 11 games and cost $349. Nvidia feels no pressure at all. They are more than happy to let AMD be a little cheaper. They have the mindshare, their card will almost certainly run cooler and quieter, and they will still sell more due to brand recognition alone.
  2. Vega is slightly to significantly faster than the 1070 and costs $349. Nvidia feels the pressure and releases a GTX 1070 TI. Basically it's an overclocked 1070 that has GDDR5X memory. It beats the new vega but costs a little more. Nvidia margins are less but they have the performance crown for that price category still.
  3. Vega is a very high-end part and competes with the 1080. If it beats the 1080, Nvidia shrugs, dusts off binned Titan X's that have one or two clusters disabled and sells the new 1080 TI for $100 higher (read repeat what it did to the Fury and Nano with the 980 TI). Margins are still high and revenues are good as Nvidia yields just seem to be better than AMD.

In all cases, Nvidia is happy to have the more expensive product as long as it still has the performance crown in its price tier, no matter how small (OC to OC 480 and gtx 1060 are very similar but people think the 1060 is faster). They don't care if AMD is a little cheaper. With 90% marketshare, people tend to default to your product even when the other guy is a little cheaper.

I'm sad to say that Polaris won't be the architecture that helps AMD take back the crown. It will help them recover marketshare at least if only because there marketshare has cratered so much there's nowhere to go but up. That being said, miners seem to be screwing them again as it seems a ton of supply is being bought up just for compute which means a market flooded with cheap used cards once the new bitcoin gets hacked and collapses in price.

Maybe the successor to Polaris will help them the way this generation should have. The performance per watt is still only Maxwell level and they seem to have yield problems given how high the voltage on stock 480's are. Polaris seems to be a good architecture but it's too new of a process to be that profitable for AMD I suspect.

We already have prices like that now. If AMD was a real competitor we'd have 600 dollar performance crown cards not 1200. We'd have Enthusiast CPUs for 800 not 1600.

Not exactly a growing industry so if anyone was going to buy AMD it should have happened already. Even if it did happen, don't expect whoever buys them to offer you discrete gpu parts for your gaming pleasure either. I think you're better of hoping they recover than being bought off and consumer attitude could help a bit in this regard.
There is no point with AMD and GPUs if they are incapable of competingfor whatever reason. Be it funds, brains or whatever.

If the tweet was about Vega and its com
ing out in February or March. Thats epic fail right there. 8 months after GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.
