Apply tim to GTX 1080

Just wanted some clarification. I have seen the argument before and want a better understanding once and for all. I have done some readers have and have noticed many people say gpu chips do not have a heat spreader like your CPU. If this is true I also noticed a pattern online and a bunch of confusion with instructions for applying tim to your gpu. Ekwb suggests an X and cross method, while others say pea size, and even others suggest apply thin layer, but wouldn't think layer cause air to get trapped ? Also ekwb suggests the cross and X method but this is for waterblocks, can the same method apply to heavier heat sinks ? There is too much confusion surrounding this, I asked gigabyte what they did and the answer was pea sized method, while others say this won't work because gpu doesn't have heat spreader. I am so confused on what's best it's frustrating with all these solutions with no answer. To confuse me more Linus did a video with a line method. What the hell is the proper way to reapply tim to your gpu ? I

I have always used pea size for CPU and have had successful results. I want to test this on gtx 1060 / 1070 / 1080 but the due seems dimilar to 980. I'm guessing the X method might be best due to non heat spreader ? Also it depends on type of tim due to it making a mess ??

A short line is probably sufficient. You do want complete coverage due to the lack of a heat spreader. If you're that worried, do a trial run. Use what you think makes sense, & install the heatsink. If you have a clear line of sight to the die, check to see if you have some thermal compound pushed out all the way around the die. If not, you may need to reapply with more. If you don't have a clear line of sight, remove the heatsink & check the spread. If it wasn't sufficient, reinstall with more paste. If it was sufficient, repeat the amount you used the first time & call it good.
