When did Microsoft start adopting malvertising tactics?

Thread Starter
Was reading a stupid article on DailyMail, and in copying the link, missed the copy click by a pixel and noticed the windows store on my PC open(which hasn't been opened in several reboots) to the Daily Mail app and open a new tab to microsoft store in Chrome.

What scares me is that an ad from a supposedly legitimate company was able to easily execute an application on my machine, through a 3rd party browser, even with uBlock. I know malvertising does this commonly, sometimes linking people to a page that look legitimate, but isn't with a wall of text saying you basically give up your computer to them, and many users are trained to just click okay. Or, like this instance, execute and/or deposit code onto the passer-by's PC.
My biggest concern is a malicious 3rd party utilizing the method Microsoft has left open for their products and services. Though, that is not my only concern.
