Yep exactly. No idea why the whole Image Quality thing gets brought up so much.

Especially since we are talking macs, not bad-ass gaming machines.

Don't Apple write their own OpenGL drivers for the graphics card? Meaning, you don't have to get and install drivers from the GPU's manufacturer? If that's the case, I'd guess the Apple engineers made sure to make the hardware produce exactly the output they want to have for both AMD and NVIDIA GPU, so the image comparison in Windows might be misleading and not matter at all for Mac.

I dont think they do, since AMD had downloadable drivers for Apple. I do know that when Apple release an update with one of the new series of GPUs supported you can basically use any card of that series for a hackintosh.

So if there was a Macbook with a 270x ati card, you could install any 2xx series card in your mac/hackintosh.

If Image quality was indeed different, AMD's marketing team would have been all over it by now.

Looks like reducing draw calls or the pop-in effect. You can see this by just benchmarking a 970 vs. 290x in valley.

That's probably why they're using AMD GPUs.

Regarding the image quality debate, my one and only experience with an AMD GPU was the R9 290. I had a GTX 580 at the time and when I put the R9 290 in it was a very noticeable difference right away at the POST screen. The black was blacker and the white text was brighter and more distinct.

Then the Windows 7 splash screen came up and that was noticeably better-looking.

Then my desktop came up. Everything looked better. It was like I had upgraded to a monitor with a clear glass panel instead of the matte type. Even my games looked better. Years ago I read that GeForce cards have a little bit of a washed-out look in games, but I didn't really buy into it. When I launched my first game though, I saw the difference with my own eyes. The image was truly clearer. Again, it was like using a clear glass panel instead of the hazy matte panel.

I didn't keep the R9 290 though because it eventually started throwing artifacts all over the place at random intervals no matter what I was doing. These artifacts were small thin horizontal green lines that would flash all over the monitor (not constantly, but once in a while). So, I returned it, got a GTX 780, and I've been happy ever since. Except, I went back to the slightly inferior image quality. Do I care though? No, of course not. I'm not doing anything that requires the best image quality possible.

I do hate that Apple went clear glass. The matte option costs extra. Clear glass makes color accuracy go down the drain, and because calibration devices do not sit flat on the LCD itself and can pass outside light between the 2 layers the calibration is not accurate at all. :(
