Does any X99 motherboard support 2nd and 3rd Gen Socket 2011 i7s?

Please excuse me if this is in the wrong section, I wish there was a quick question/answer thread.

Hi, I'm in the planning stages of upgrading my rig.
I'm looking to put an i7 3970x or/or later an i7 4960x in it so normally I'd go for an x79 MB with LGA 2011 Socket. X99 motherboard have LGA 2011-3 Socket. Can any of the later mount these processors?

I'll try to buy an XSPC watercooling kit also, it's gonna be a beauty biggrin.gif

Correct. They have the same pin count, but they are not compatible and I believe they are keyed differently too so you can't install the wrong one.

It's too bad they didn't just make LGA 2012 so it's 100% clear that they are different sockets.

Some ****ty sites misinformed me about compatibility lists. X79 it is then.

BTW Extended ATX motherboards are just wider, right? Not taller? My Pandora ATX doesn't officially support EATX motherboards, but has tons of room for a wider one than I have now.

X79 is going to be Sandy bridge-E and Ivy-E. X99 2011-3 is going to be anything Haswell-E, Broadwell-E

Yeah I'm going for a n i7 3970x and maybe later an i7 4960x. Any of those from what I've seen is beating everything except extreme versions of the next gens and a couple of others.

You're better off buying an E5-1660 or E5-1660 V2 as they are unlocked and higher bin chips. My 1660 does 5ghz 24/7 no problem on air or water.

They really aren't any cheaper than the 5820k and 5930k after it's all said and done, and its still older hardware without a warranty. x79 motherboards have gotten expensive because of the amount of cheap xeon CPUS available.

There is no way I can find a haswell CPU for my budget. I really like to hunt extremely good deals I just have a thing. Plus I usually like to have the top end of an older gen of something that the bottom to mid end of a newer gen.
