[Videocardz] Leaked Zen slides - Identical performance to Broadwell-E - Page 5

So they downclocked the 6900k .7ghz almost a full ghz to show that they're equal clock for clock.

Really? Is this what we're doing now?

Jesus this is a gold medal in mental gymnastics.
I hope they prove me wrong though and this is a great chip, this is looking bulldozer all over again.

Are you people really this dense?

What would a fair performance-per-clock test be then?

Why are clock for clock test no longer valid when Intel isn't winning them?

the 6990 was priced at $700 to match Nvidia's 590
the 7970 launched at $550 (~50% increase over 6970), the price was revised to $450 when the 680 came out at a lower price ($500)
the 7990 was priced at $1000 to match Nvidia's 690
the 290x kept the $550 price tag because the 780ti priced higher at $700
the 295x2 was priced at $1,500 to chase nvidia's titan Z they didn't match the ludicrous price tag of nvidia but $1500 is still a 50% price increase over their previous dual chip card.

AMD is no angel. They push the price up as much as they think the market will allow.

6970 was clearly not the flagahip they could have done. and price was low maybe for this reason
7970 had higher double and single precision and higher bus width and memory, aswell better architecture. than the midrange GK104 using 256bit gimped in compute
7990 was effectively 30-40% faster than 6990 while using a new architecture with higher double and single precision and had 50% more vram
290x while being 25-30% faster than the 7970 kept is price tag and increased compute, banwdith and memory meanwhile nvidia had to release a 1000usd card with higher FP64
295x2 was using watercooling as default cooling while ebing 50% cheaper than the competitor

if they had used an i7 5960x wouldnt show a fair comparison, either, instead the newer architecture at same clock speed is a ok comparison,

also OCing CPU would reveal the performance gains it could get

Let's take a FX9590 and downclock it to 3.5ghz and compare it to a i7 4770k.

see how dumb that is? It's like saying the OC on graphics cards don't count because a GTX1080 at 1300mhz doesn't beat a 980ti at 1300mhz.

That would be perfectly valid to test per-clock performance.

This is AMD's weakness since Bulldozer.

Now if the Zen chip was using 95 Watts at 3 GHz and the Intel 60 Watts at 3 GHz, there might be an issue...

But for AMD to have clock-for-clock parity with Intel, in this test, without resorting to spamming corez at them, is a big deal. thumb.gif

I don't know what people are getting at really, other than Zen possibly not being able to clock to 3.5GHz+

The turbo frequency of the 6900K is 4GHz, it's debatable that they could have shown Zen at the same clock-speeds if it capable of that but we're not really sure if Zen can clock as-well as Piledriver, there could also be other reasons as to why they didn't run it at such clock-speeds.

They could want to showcase higher clocks-speeds at a later date or maybe the sample they had can't clock too well.

Either way, running both processors at the same clocks-speed makes sense, I think people are just nit-picking really, we can't really come to formal conclusions on the clock-speed capabilities of Zen at this moment in time.

It is a fair IPC test. The issue is whether Zen will be able to reach the clock speed of Broadwell. It can have higher IPC but lower clocks, meaning the end result is still worse than Intel's offering...

It is a great step though, no matter how you look at it.

no no, i'm not calling it a failure or loss ( it matches ipc anyway which is nice), just that they should try running zen on same frequency as that i7's stock speeds instead of what they did. and if anything it's better to have expectations low. something you should have learned by now.

it matches multithread performance but really single thread performance will vary, like 2600k and FX 8320

It's an engineering sample.

But even if they can't get it higher, it can still compete in the laptop/ mobile market, etc.

This big issue is that they're showing per-clock performance parity with Intel (in this test)... that's something that Intel has SLAUGHTERED AMD with since Bulldozer.
