That's because end-user PC software innovates at a glacial pace. You won't see much of HSA in the PC space until someone makes a killer app showing it off. Until then, its 5-10 year old software tweaked to run on the latest OS.

Yeah, I've got two 6370's in the other room on a dual socket Asus board. 32 "core" opteron server with 64gb of ram, minecraft is sooo smooth.

What's funny about that is Minecraft hates core count. Unless you're going Spigot and Bungee, you'll almost never see more than one or two cores actually be used.

Then again, Minecraft runs at 20tick, so it can be smooth even with 30fps. *shrug*

For someone playing SSP or SMP, would be silly.

For someone running something like Hypixel, 32 cores might be one server of dozens. Doesn't matter how many cores something uses if you instance a few thousand of them. tongue.gif

I'd take intel Xeon engineering samples over AMD's any day. Even the low frequency ones has good enough single thread performance so you won't feel sad if you try to play an old game on it.

If you use it for rendering and such, AMD might be cheaper, but when I checked an year ago AMD uses much more power for the same performance.

Zen should shake things up a bit.

Power litterally doesn't matter.

2x 140w vs 2x 90w = 100w difference. Power in the midwest is 11c/kw, so the amd setup would cost 1.1 cents more per hour. If performance is equal, and you render 24/7/365, the amd rig cost $96.36 more per year. Depends how much you're paying for each side, but in the end the power cost is insignificant compared to the price of components unless you live in a place that charges 30c/kw or something equally insane.

Power in Europe is an average of 0.24€/kW after you factor in taxes (a couple cents more or less depending on the country), so it does become quite relevant!

 

We did the math when the RX480/1060 released and running a 1060 over a RX480 and playing 24h a week (leaving the computer idling the rest of the time) meant that in a year you paid off the purchase difference of the 1060 over the 480.

 

In monetary terms, that's 40€ extra for a 40W higher TDP. I keep my computers for a long time (been running this 1055T for the past 5 and a half years), so you have to factor in power consumption.

Hardly. According to Eurostat the average is 21ct/kW, but you can get a better view of the situation from this graph.


The rest of your point still stands though.

I confirm for Bulgaria, the nightly is 0.07$/kWh, the daily is 0.14$/kWh. Averages out at 0.116$/kWh for 24h.
