Yea, I'm always amused hearing people talk about Intel getting 10% IPC gains every gen from SB. The facts simply don't support it. Some benches show Increases like this but I remember pulling a bunch of charts one day and removing the single highest gain and single lowest drop/gain (cause some gains were way niche and not gonna be seen by 99% of consumers) and I think I got from IB to BW a 17% Increase... I may be including too many gens but I'll go take a look at my old post if I can find it.

Anyways, Intel does not get about 10% on average per gen so I don't know why we should think it will now. Intels focus is on efficiency almost entirely as this point. They currently have desktop/server x86 on lockdown and want to push further into mobile space.

Edit> Yea here is my post quoted by someone with more info.

So your saying there has been no gains on TOCk cpus? Think we can rule out refresh cpus.

IPC gains are highly variable from task to task, but the average gain from Ivy Bridge to Skylake is well in excess of 17%, mainly because of Haswell. Intel's tocks have generally been pretty significant, with the ticks much more modest improvements, and this was a cycle that wasn't broken until Skylake, when Intel abandoned that generational model.

GG intel.

Its very interesting. You are acting like you dont want competition. Well, of course we can expect huge amount of HYPE and yes ZEN beat Broadwell E in 1 benchmark. Good think is that the benchmark is FPU intensive.

Important thing is...? AMD is BACK! Well we need to wait to official benchmarks, but its looking very good so far. All I want is cheaper CPUs, I dont mind which one...

If you hate AMD ... no need to make troll post here.

ZEN is wider than HASWELL and I hope it will be faster than Haswell in 80% of benchmarks.

Not no gains, just minimal and overstated by the community plenty of times here on OCN. Not everyone does it, some people are realistic and know their stuff, but it gets passed on so much its pretty much norm for people to post Intel gets average 10% IPC jump each gen. It's just not true. I edited my post above, go look smile.gif

I said SB to BW, not IB to SL.

I dont doubt that they can disable features. But, as far as i can recall, AMD has always opted to disable cores only and leave the feature intact across market segments.

Kaby Lake is just an optimized Skylake like Devils Canyon. I wouldnt expect significant ipc gains, though if they add edram to some SKUs that might provide some gains.

Ya i was thinking the crabby lake was a tock but its looking like a refresh. Maybe cannonlake will be a tock.

AMD needs to add ZEN support to WattMan, so we can have any TDP we want rolleyes.gif
