[AMD] Breakthrough Performance of “Zen” (Head to Head with Broadwell-E!) - Page 41

His involvement in Zen is hardly incidental.

As to the 'cheap 8 cores' and giving 'something back to their investors'? AMD wants marketshare, marketshare makes the stock number go up. Stock number go up, investor happy go up. It's fairly simple. I think it's foolish to expect them to not price aggressively. In my opinion, this means the majority of Zen SKU's will be nearer i5/i7 mainstream prices than the prices of the HEDT range. Haswell-ish IPC would dictate this sort of pricing, as the 5820k would be a direct competitor at a mainstream i7 price. Remember what Lord Huang has taught us, the competition dictates the price.
Only when it's profitable for blue/green. otherwise you gotta be a charity. wink.gif

I Run 3 GPUs, and Plan to replace those w/ VEGA GPUs, which use PCIe Bus for XFire/mGPU instead of the Bridge.

There are distinct advantages for me to go from FX8 Core AM3+ to Zen 8 Core AM4.

-More PCIe CPU/NB Lanes, and Faster Lanes.
Right now I Run 16x/16x/4x XFire w/ PCIe 2.0, Most of the time the 3rd GPU is Disabled and PCIe Lanes are used for other devices (USB 3.0 Card, 10-Bit HDMI Recording, etc).
More PCIe Lanes in the CPU/NB or even the same amount, would allow me to run my current GPUs at 8x/8x/8x PCIe 3.0 which is pretty much equiv to 16x/16x/16x PCIe2.0, as well as running the 10-Bit HDMI Card at 2x or 4x.

-DDR4 and Higher Capacity DIMMs
While my Manual says i can use up to 32GB, finding 4x 8 GB 240 Pin DIMM Kits under $175 for Performance Brands/Specs (not Value Tier Kits!) is getting harder and harder...,
Mean While, DDR4 with it's 288 Pin DIMMs, support 2x16GB Dimms, which can be bought for $130 and leave you room to upgrade to 64GB Later, or Go 64GB for $225-250.
Compared to 2x 16GB 240Pin DDR3 Performance Kits Run #200+, and would be slower.

-Higher IPC, SMT, Better Cache, Scheduler, Micro-Op Queue, Etc etc etc.

So Lets see the Benefits here, in order for my FX8350 (8c/8T or 4C/8T depending on driver version); to keep up with Intel's Mid Tier 2c/4t and 4c/8t Chips, I have to Ramp up the Clocks to Insane Levels, Throw My Power Consumption Through the Roof, as well as heat output and strain on main board VRM Components.

When I can have a 8 Core/16 Thread SMT Chip, Double my Hardware Thread capability, run it at 3.5 or 4.0 GHz, and Comfortably beat the pants off the FX8350, in both single thread and multi-threaded environments.

Estimated 40%~ IPC Improvement over the Last Generation "Construction" Cores (Excavator), Which was only used on FM2+, along with Steam Roller, AM3+ Stopped at Pile Driver,
So:
Bulldozer -- Discontinued Early
PileDriver -- Baseline IPC for AM3+
SteamRoller -- +20% IPC Over Pile Driver
Excavator --- +5% IPC Over Steam Roller

So, Zen Over Pile Driver is Estimated to be +65-70% IPC Increase Alone,

Couple that w/ Fixed Cache Systems/Latency, Branch Prediction, Greater Parallelism, SMT over CMT, etc etc etc.

Benchmarks comparing Zen to Intels i7 are one thing, but when you compare those numbers vs a FX8350 at the same 3.0GHz, We get more than DOUBLE the performance.

But AMD said they will no longer be seen as the cheap alternative. If it has equal performance, they'll price it at equal cost.

A != B. Not being the cheap alternative means that they're not going to price for pence to Intel's pound. It doesn't mean that they won't position products aggressively to gain an advantage. Offering -10%ish IPC and more cores/threads at mainstream i7 prices wouldn't be "cheap" but it would make the AMD product a very attractive purchase. I doubt the master plan is to produce something that competes with 4790k's and 5820k's and then price it at $1500 USD.

considering how far behind they are releasing a product that was within 10% of Intel's latest offerings would be an incredible achievement. But we'll get the same "hurr durr, Intels still faster" comments.

I'm pretty out of the loop with processors since my last build was in 2010. How has AMD finally achieved the equivalent of hyperthreading? This seems to be one of the biggest factors in performance up until now, having to compensate with more cores.

Someone quote me if I'm wrong but hyperthreading was never the "biggest factors in performance" unless you're talking like single core with HT.

It's single threaded performance and thread count would be secondary if you had at least 2-4 cores depending how recent you're talking and with specific work loads...
