[AMD] Breakthrough Performance of “Zen” (Head to Head with Broadwell-E!) - Page 53

Let's not fall to the hype and wait for real reviews.
Many say ZEN will bring prices down. I on the other hand hope AMD will bring something in the
high - end. I remember my Barton XP 2500+ system on Nvidia N-Force 2 Ultra 400,
man i loved the sound of it. They could also use Radeon brand for ZEN chipset, that would also be pretty cool. Maybe some enchaced features for AMD GPU users. There are plenty of possibilities for them to use this gaming / VR stuff they make to create some kickin ass hardware.

Well, one guy said "Maybe we will get a 6950X equivalent for sub $800-1000",

I didn't realize there was going to be a 10C/20T Zen, to which the next guy replies

"I doubt it. We haven't heard anything about a >2 CCX chip for AM4 thus far, so anything more than 8c/16t doesn't appear to be happening, at least initially."

So just looking for some clarification.

i don't really think those 1700+ dollar cpus are flying off the shelf anyway.

I sure see more than a few guys sporting them just on this site.

besides, if zen is faster than a 4790k it's faster in gaming than a 6950x anyway.

Yeah, my bad. I totally forget that gaming is the only reason people buy computers in the first place.

And let's not forget that the amount of people that own these are almost assuredly going to belong to communities like OCN, LTT, TH and such and almost everyone WILL make sure they let you know they own one, so the stats are very inflated if you only take enthusiast communities as your only sample base.

You're right, I'm sure the screenshots and benchmark submissions have all been faked.

A lot of discussion on price, people putting figures on things, obviously based off personal position. All of that being understandable of course, that is for sure, but something to consider...

If AMD does pull off what it looks like they could, and it is very possible, the 'cheap' AMD pricing people have gotten used to over the last 10 years goes away. They will be able to sell at higher pricing, because it would be worth it. On the other side of that, Intel's pricing should correct with time and come down as well if AMD stays competitive.

Basically; both sides need to maintain margins of some level, and manufacturing costs are going up. People should just be a little more guarded on what they think Zen will cost if it truly does compete with Intel. A lot of people in here are setting themselves up for disappointment where price is concerned.

EDIT:

AMD pricing is likely to go up, while Intel will hopefully come down, should Zen compete.

So we can conclude that Intel has sold "more than a few" of them, but nothing more than that. The number of people who would drop that stupid level of money on a CPU when you can get something with 60% of the performance for 25% of the price or 80% of the performance for 58% of the price... Well it's not going to be all that many. Not compared to the enormous amount of laptops and OEM products with Intel CPUs, and even budget minded enthusiasts who will smartly buy a 6 core CPU instead. The market for a 6950X is nothing that AMD needs to even be thinking about right now.

Very true, but halo products do have an impact on marketshare.

Probably a large buyers of low-end nVidia cards have largely made a decision to buy nVidia because of the brand image as being 'faster' based solely on the Titan cards.
