Capitalism is literally in the name of crony capitalism but they are two different things? As far as I know private ownership of the means of production exists in both.

Mmh, don't know how they made their estimation about the costs of Internet, as I see the US (of course) but also Turkey, Belgium and Switzerland (I live there) are considered extremely expensive for what you pay for.

And it looks like countries where government influence or legislatio translates its interest for universal access in laws and investment that it cheapens the customer cost.

Still got 100/100 on fiber for 65$ a month... Cheap or expensive ?

You can't really compare Europe and US to Australia, which is a somehow isolated island, the internet for sure will be much expensive there considering the cost of the submarine fiber cables, but still it should be lower.

My country is in the same situation, three years ago I used to work for one of the local ISPs, a STM-1 155Mbps connection used to cost us $24K. So thats $153.5 per 1Mbps !!
We used to charge the customer $26 for 1Mbps at a contention ratio of 10:1(Up to ten 1Mbps customers will share that 1Mbps), so in the end the revenue was $260 and thats assuming we had enough customers, that was barely profitable considering other costs, IMO the best package was 8Mbps/2Mbps costing about $80.

Three years later the situation is much better, for the same $80 you can get a 30Mbps/5Mbps connection, so I guess the cost dropped a lot.

Id not consider that cheap or expensive prob in the middle. In France for that 100/100 its around 39€ after the first year, first year is 20€ a month. In the US for 100/5 i used to pay around 150-160$ and thats without any HBO/Showtime or any of the extra channels. Same here in France thats your basic channels, you add Bein or Canal + and it skyrockets, Canal + alone is like 40$ a month, theres your capitalism. Unfortunately if you like football and f1 you HAVE to get it.

Good for them, i pay about 30€ a month for 40/4, and im still lucky that my ISP doesn't use NAT like one of the companies :/ . Speaking of the devil, i hope this carrier grade NAT usage wont get viral because then my minecraft and openvpn server will be busted :/ .

over here in Japan, contract with NTT Hikari flet and SONET ISP (subsidary of SONY) I do pay 5000JPY/month for 1Gbps optic fiber with unlimited download/upload(no throttling, no mail in the box telling me to stop torrent) so cant really too much complain

and it will get better the closer we get to Tokyo olympics.

cell phones contracts on the other hand are pure rip off....

Yea but only reason that is is because one company lowered their prices so low that everyone else pretty much had to do the same. The cell phone services are pretty affordable as well with 4g+.

Im stuck at 12/500kbps until they get fiber in the building, then im switching to 100/100 if possible.

Yea that ends up being like 45€ for 1gpbs thats pretty ridiculous. Must be in a big city though, i wonder what small towns/cities in Japan get though.

I do not know why they dropped it but it doesn't really matter for me... The only thing that needs some boost is the upload speed biggrin.gif. As for cell phones, well talking is not that bad, but the mobile net with their stone age data caps is a crap :/ . The cheapest unlimited talk and sms plan is 33 euro with 1gig net cap, and the expensive end is 50 euro with 5 gigs. What a bad joke in 2016... jealoussmiley.gif

sure it helps living close to Tokyo but you get 200Mpbs with fiber or high speed ADSL more in countryside and as I said Tokyo olympics coming will boost the infrastructure further nationwide.no regret of having left France....
