So going from a 980TI to 1070 insane idea or great idea :-)

Sidegrade.

Depends on the cost and hassle. I'd atleast go for a 1080. But really, no need to upgrade at all unless you're going 4k. Then you'd have to get a Titan XP to have good performance at that resolution.

It's a straight sidegrade that you might consider for technology improvements (such as NVENC) or power (thus heat/noise)
