[TH] PCI Express 4.0 Brings 16 GT/s And At Least 300 Watts At The Slot - Page 14

PCI Express 4.0 will not offer more than 75W via the motherboard slot - DVHardware
Quote:
A couple of days ago one of the big stories was about how PCI Express 4.0 would dramatically increase the maximum motherboard power slot draw, and how this could eliminate PCIe power cables for video cards.

I had some doubts about the story as it didn't make a lot of sense, which was warranted as PCI-SIG now clarified that PCI Express 4.0 will not feature a slot power draw increase.

The goal is to increase the maximum power capabilities of PCI Express 4.0, but the motherboard power slot draw will remain at the current 75W limit
Quote:
PCI-SIG reached out to tell us that the power increase for PCI Express 4.0 will come from secondary connectors and not from the slot directly. They confirmed that we were initially told incorrect information.

ohh, so its possible that they're revising the 6pin and 8pin auxiliary power to provide much higher power ratings.

accordingly though, PCIe "max power capabilities" means PEG+AUX.
so does this mean PCIe 3.0 cards that exceeded 300W are already outside of PCI-SIG spec?

Now if only we could get a USB 3.0 header cable that's...I dunno...flexible?

if they had used a stranded cable instead of one gigantic bundle it wouldn't be as stiff as it is.

and if they're worrying about noise then they could just use twisted pairs, with each pair being individually sleeved.

Yeah...I guess my focus should have criticized more mobo manufacturers for their placements of the things, too. Putting it right above the PCI-e slot and right behind the I/O connections is what keeps me up at night redface.gif.

well, placement is a board design flaw, i'm more worried about how flimsy the USB 3.0 header is.
i mean, just a bit of wrong plugging and the pins bends, and in the worst case they even snap right off when you unbend them.

i wish they'd just use the USB 3.0 port internally.
seriously, whats wrong with having an internal USB port?
its not like theres no such thing as male-to-female cables.

wait, why are we talking about USB......

Great. Now I am back to not caring at all about getting a new PCI-E spec.

I'm very excited at the idea of having a computer that has a PCIE 4.0 slots on my mobo, I hope to get one as soon as possible considering my situation is that my current main computer is dead and using my laptop while trying to decide what to do from here. The more I search, the more I feel as if I should hold off from spending money right now to either get an x99 mobo + cpu + new ram as well as not spend $150-300 usd on a x58 mobo again

But instead reallocate whatever resources I would have and just wait til sometime next year for skylake E or X, if at that point I'm still not satisifed at least the resale value would be greater than an x99 or x58 system I would have other wise and I could get a better return on selling it on amazon or ebay.

My only question for you guys is, even though none of us really know the absolute answer to this, would it be safe to assume we'll see mobos for a skylake E or X cpu that has a PCIE 4.0 slot sometime in 2017? If so then that will really solidify my choice to wait til then
