SATA III Data Extensions

Thread Starter
I think this is a good spot for this question, my other option was "Hard Drives & Storage", but to me, this is more of a custom job so I am hoping to reach those users. If it needs to be moved, go right ahead.

I am trying to find either a SATA III (6Gb) extension cable of like 6 to 12 inches which would be 1 male and 1 female connector or just a short male/male adapter/connector that will let me chain in a 2nd SATA cable that I own.

From the few that I have come across so far, it is either all 22 pins in one big unit (so power connection included as well) which I don't want, or I happen to see a specification that it is rated for up to 3Gbps (like this Monoprice one).
Now everyone that I find that does not explicitly state the rated speed makes me wonder if it will be a bottleneck or not.
I plan to connect the cable to an SSD so true SATA III speeds will be utilized.

Without going into a lot of unnecessary detail, I want to use a nice sleeved SATA cable that I own and have it visible coming from the motherboard connection and the end into the SSD won't matter since it will be hidden so it doesn't need to look pretty.
Obviously since I made this thread, my current cable is a bit short for the run I want to do so I am now looking for a way to solve that.

The only other thing I thought of, but haven't looked into any further, is if one of the 22 pin extensions is true SATA III speeds and I would be able to separate the power and data extensions with the help of a dremel to cut through the plastic connector side.
Not my top choice, but it may be possible, again only if it is rated for 6Gbps.

I would hope that I am not the only one who has needed this so there has got to be a solution out there, its just not easy to find and confirm the rated speeds.
Hopefully someone has past experience using an extension for an SSD and can point me in the right direction.

Eh, I thought I went into enough detail to answer the question I figured someone would ask without adding in even more that I could.

Thank you for the suggestions, the Newegg one says 3Gbps max so that is out. (It may even be the same as the Monoprice ones)
The Delock one is indeed 6Gbps and it looks like they have a 30cm which is basically 12", but it looks like it is based out of Germany and maybe other European countries if I attempted to buy it.
I guess that site only describes the products, but you cant actually buy from there, I'd have to find an online dealer and likely pay international shipping.
That's what I am looking for though, I just need to try and get one in the US or that wouldn't be a high price for shipping to make it worthwhile to me.

Sata 1, Sata 2 and Sata 3 all use the same cables? There is no 3Gbps max they all do 6Gbps Unless its a damaged cable.

Except, possibly, for some really old cables (which no one will be selling new anyway) or really, really cheap ones, all SATA cables are capable of handling SATA III (6Gbps) speeds, even ones saying only 3Gbps. Rating cables for speed is a marketing ploy to trick you into spending money to replace perfectly good cables.

Oh really? That is wonderful news then, thank you both of you!!!
In the back of my head I was thinking, isn't it just 7 pin connectors and made of some wire so why would it matter, but I didn't want to take that risk.

Any chance either of you have personal experience with one to know/guarantee any will work?
I have seen Lady's builds from time to time to know and respect her custom work so I have a feeling I can trust her, but the extra piece of mind is always nice.

I've only used one SSD with a cable and I don't remember what it was rated for but the SSD runs at its rated speed. However, I have read in numerous places that all SATA cables run at SATA III.

Akasa Pro Slim SATA cables have removable connectors so you can cut the SATA cable down to the exact size you need. I did a tutorial on how to sleeve them here.

I first tried using long nose pliers but the little piece would slip much of the time. I then tried slip joint pliers for more parallel action when putting the connectors back together but, still, sometimes the little piece would still go in a bit crooked, bending the teeth enough they wouldn't make good contact. I came up with a way to use small locking pliers to keep the piece from going crooked, which worked well but was a bit awkward and time consuming to set up (http://www.sevenforums.com/pc-custom-builds-overclocking/329300-got-new-case-34.html post #338) so I made a little fixture that was much easier to use (same thread, post #354).

I now use a vice to compress them with no failures in more than 30 cables made. Nice work on the fixture! thumb.gif
