Actually the Lord and Savior Christ Roberts said 2014... in 2012.. this game has been in development for 4 years.

This is a man who has never saw a deadline he couldn't destroy by not meeting it. The only reason we ever got Freelancer was because Microsoft bought him out and actually set down some deadlines for the team. CR is incapable of meeting a deadline. I said 2017 or 2018 back in 2013 and people said I was nuts.

IF THIS GAME get's released it will be at least 2018 at this point.

It has been in development for two years. Two years was spent building CiG from the ground up. People seem to conveniently forget this little fact.

No it's not forgotten, it's not convenient. There was programming going on in 2012 and if you deny that then you're proposing a false narrative to give people a pass. Every person hired in 2012 2013 wasn't spending their time building the company. MUCH of that time was spent coding. We knew about the netcode issue being worked on as early as August of 2013 or have you conveniently forgotten they were talking about that blocker in summer of 2013?

I don't think CR fully realized the scale of what he was trying to build. I don't think any of us did. For all the "broken promises" of release dates that were pushed out, we weren't supposed to have seamless planet transitions either - but now we do.

NMS showed the scale is possible, but you still need a lot of hand crafting to make it interesting. You might as well double the typical development time in that case, because it probably takes just as long to develop the procedural generated content, as it does the hand crafted content. And as we saw, NMS was in development for quite some time with much less developers and funding, and it was hardly a (single player) game when released. Both NMS and SC show that you need a lot of funding and time to really make this work.

On the bright side, it looks like they're finally getting very close to having an engine that can actually handle this scale (which from the videos and just general flight, feels way better and just overall so much more accurate than NMS). That alone must be worth a lot, and I'm sure they will or maybe even are hedging it to get more funding/loans if ever needed. It was very smart for them to go the route they did and flat out just buy the rights early on, as opposed to a license. I do worry about how long it may take to finish the base game universe content. Some of these ships are larger than entire corridor shooter games. If this game were to be released in 2020, it would still be 10 years ahead of its time.

Come on. That's not even a fair comparison at all. NMS is literally garbage. I foresee more playable content in 2017, and more than likely a release of some sorts in '18.

And pretty much everything done in that time is being rebuild/overhauled because the game got so much bigger in scale and scope. There was an actual poll asking the backers (you know, people who actually paid for them to develop the game, not just point fingers on the internet) if they rather have a smaller game faster or wait for a bigger, more polished and feature rich one. They choose the latter, so CIG is simply doing what their fanbase wants.

Does that mean that CR doesn't have a deadline problem? No, I actually think CIG should stop giving dates and start pushing out 'to-do' lists instead, so people knew what is being worked on to the next patch instead of when it's coming out. They are developing the game, they shouldn't rush things so people can play. It's alpha, for god's sake.

Yeah, given how large the game is and how new tech needed to be developed...not seeing an issue with the release date. I mean if you take bread out before it's done baking, it deflates. This is what happened with NMS.
