There's also another reason why I thought that the temperature spikes aren't normal: the guy who built my computer had some problems with applying the Kryonaut paste. He had to add more paste several times in order to evenly spread it. Maybe it's not evenly spread or maybe we even used too much, resulting in worse temperatures? Should I run the Intel burn test to see whether my cooling solution holds up during load?
Yup, I noticed that myself. After 2 minutes or so the temperatures are normal. The spike is still there though when launching software.

Oh, by the way: Yesterday something really strange happened. I COULDN'T SHUT DOWN MY PC ANYMORE! O_o I chose to "Shut down" my PC at least 10 times but every time I was thrown back to the desktop screen after 2 or 3 seconds, it was like an ultra fast reboot instead of shutting down. I had to enforce the shutdown by logging out (to prevent data loss) and by pressing and holding the power button a few seconds. Not sure what happened there... the last thing I want to imagine is that my hardware is haunted. worriedsmiley.gif

Hi there

I usually use Kryonaut on my CPU and tried too on Titan X

I usually using rice method on CPU,tried spread but didn't worked for me on Titan X,on GPU I've used X method which looks like best application.I would tr again remount cooler and use only rice method there, this has worked for me on every CPU,Kryonaut is good paste and works on my 5820k very nicely,on GPU I've used Noctua NH-H1 paste and temps with stock cooler are lower than previously, but stock cooler is very very loud, jet fighter take off

Now about the spike, what power option do you have enabled in BIOS and in Windows, please check what power option,my Noctua NH-D15 fans on CPU idles at 800RPM or around 48-50% and then I've set progressive ramp up to 80% which keeps CPU temps under control

My other fans are controlled through the 2 fan controllers from Phobya,I thought so they're emitting buzzing noise.but found the issue, looks like Enthoo Primo is slightly vibrating

Regarding the spikes, can you check with opened Task Manger and check what is taking most CPU cycles and if you could download SIV64 its great monitoring SW

Link on SIV

http://rh-software.com/

Depends on application of the paste, then yes this can result in higher temps,I would try Asus RealBench to see what temps you will hit under very heavy load,is yours CPU OC or not ?

And regarding the Shut down, please check yours power option and check too BIOS

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Thanks for the suggestions! biggrin.gif

I downloaded ASUS Realbench software and did the benchmark and stress test. Both tests passed. Benchmark results:

Not sure what to make of it.

The temperatures are as follows according to SIV (I let it run during the stress test):

Are these good temperatures? I can't tell honestly, I find this software a little bit confusing/overwhelming.

My system is not overclocked but the CPU seems to overclock itself from 4.0 to 4.2ghz when it's under heavy load.
The "balanced (recommended)" power option is enabled in Windows power options.

Hi there

Yours CPU is i7-6700k ? If yes then this CPU should have turbo boost 4.2GHz when is under heavy load

Regarding temps, they're not bad,but still I would expect bit lower temps under heavy load on yours CPU if its 6700k,I would suggest to lower vCore and cache/input voltage this should allows you to have lower temps as 1.4v vCore is lot vCore for 4.2GHz,you should be able have and boot and stable at 1.2-1.25v and not 1.4v

Those voltages I would expect from 4.6-4.8GHz not 4.0GHz plus turbo

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Yes, that's an i7 6700k. I didn't change any settings in the BIOS/UEFI regarding the CPU.
I have to change the vCore in the UEFI, right? I think I'll go with 1.25 first. Are there any risks when changing these settings?

Kinda sad that the temps aren't better. I even set all the case fans (4x Noctua IndustrialPPC 3000rpm) and the CPU fans to maximum before stress testing.

Hi there

Looks like yours MB overvolting CPU,you shouldn't need so much vCore

Try set this in UEFI BIOS under vCore to manual and set that at 1.25v for now, then test with Real Bench and then again lower voltage again by .01 to 1.24v and try get to close 1.20v,if it will be unstable or BSOD adjust voltage and check what BSOD error you will get

Only risk when you change this, you can get BSOD,but this depends on more factors, but still 1.4v for vCore is too much for 4.2GHz,this vCore I would expect for 4.6-4.8GHz and you should have lower temps with lower vCore

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

That software looks a bit confusing to me too. I've been pretty happy with HWiNFO64 for monitoring. If I'm reading it correctly though, your VCore is going up to 1.472V, which is pretty high, & would be expected to give high temperatures. It might be lower than that under load though. I can't really tell from that screenshot alone.
Yes, you need to change VCore in UEFI. 1.25V is a reasonable place to start. It won't hurt anything. Worst case, if you set your core clock too high, you might have to reset your CMOS to be able to boot again. That's all part of the process. The only real risk is if you push the voltage too high, but I'm guessing you'll start having temperature concerns before you reach that point. Hi there

It looks confusing on first sight, but offers some features which others monitoring SW doesn't offer

I would have look on this SW,its confusing, but developer updates his build very regularly

Features like PWM control, stress testing,GPU fan control,Corsair AIO control

But agree his vCore is very high and he should be in 1.25v range at stock speeds, with such high voltage I would expect he can easily to OC to 4.6-4.8GHz chip dependent agree

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

I tried changing the voltage but I can't input any numbers at this screen (+/- doesn't do anything either):

Any ideas on how to change it?

Hi there

Try or put those numbers in CPU Core Voltage override which should do the trick, you are currently running in BIOS 1.344v which is still too much

Can you check what LLC are you running ?

You can check that through the Asus AI Suite if you don't know where is it and you can change voltage too under Windows in AI Suite, many people don't change that, but I do change sometimes my voltages in AI Suite or in ASRock SW depends on MB,if you put wrong numbers then PC will BSOD or will freeze which means you need raise

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Thanks, that worked! thumb.gif Man, that UEFI thing is confusing. doh.gif

I changed it to 1.25 (also set the "threshold" of the AI Suite to 1.264 or something), then started stress testing again with the ASUS Realbench software and noticed that the voltage still goes up to 1.32something (at least according to SIV), then I aborted the stress test. Not sure if the AI Suite is interfering and changing the voltage or if I did something wrong.

That's "load line calibration", right? Is it one of these values?

I'll also look into the UEFI in a bit to see whether I can find anything about LLC. I'll edit this post then.
