[Skylake] 6700K for an high end SLI and a M.2 4x SSD. What is the point of X99 with 40 lanes?

Hi all,
is it possible to install an high end SLI and a M.2 4x SSD on a 6700K CPU without loosing performance in peripherals?

6700K gives us 28 lanes, suppose to use 16 lanes for the SLI, we have other 12 spare lanes for SSDs and other.

So, what is exactly the point of having 40 lanes?

Thanks.

40 lanes allows for SLI of two x16 graphics cards at full bandwidth for PCIe 3.0. When you SLI with a 28-lane CPU you only get 8 lanes each. There is a measurable difference between x8 and x16 bandwidth. This difference is only about 1% though.

gaming wise this difference is smashed by the different architecture, so what is the sense?
I know that in other scenarios more cores count but gaming wise, is there a single pros in having an HEDT platform?

The 6700k only has 16pcie lanes from the factory. Thats 8x 8x for SLI and everything else runs off of a different chip.

nice post, thanks but is there a single mobo that does not add 12 lanes to the bundle?

as previously said every mainstream mobos add pci lanes to the bundle and the resulting PCI lanes are 28 not 16

that's wrong on two levels. they are not PCI lanes, they are PCI-e lanes, and the Chip only offers 16 lanes stated on Intels website thumb.gif

i know. my post wasn't even referring to the board but he/she decided to post about the resulting lane count which i stated i always thought it was but didn't know the chip only offered 16 pcie lanes, like he/she was trying to correct me er something, lol
