Thoughts and review on new build.

Thread Starter
Now that I have a new job, I am planning my next build as a full upgrade from what I have now. My sig build is still in use, and I will be moving up to a current series mobo, cpu, gpu, and RAM.

Specs are to be:
CPU - Intel 6700K ( http://www.microcenter.com/product/451883/Core_i7-6700K_40GHz_LGA_1151_Boxed_Processor )
Mobo - ASUS Z170 Deluxe ( http://www.microcenter.com/product/452550/Z170-Deluxe_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard )
GPU - Sapphire RX480 8GB ( http://www.microcenter.com/product/466260/Radeon_RX_480_8GB_GDDR5_PCIe_Video_Card )
RAM - G.Skill TridentZ 16GB (8gbx2) DDR4 3200 CL14 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232407 )

Will be using the same case, SSD, and peripherals to start at least, may upgrade those later. I probably plan on overclocking the 6700K moderately, and the 480 moderately, with an attempt to reduce CL to around 10 on the RAM as I've seen others managing that with good results for the price.

Price is just shy of $1,000 total that I plan to set aside over the next 4 months or so. I'm in a bit of a competition with the wife to 'earn' it. We're both trying to lose weight, so for each 10lb or so I lose, new pc part biggrin.gif 40lb is a lot, but its within my goal, and if it takes until tax return time I get it then anyways lol.

Thoughts or suggestions?

You really need a new PSU as well because what you have is terrible and should be replaced
Why you should not buy a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold

If you are going to get a new motherboard CPU RAM and video card you really dont want to risk it with an old crappy PSU
That would just be foolish so please get rid of that old Cooler Master.

I've read reviews on it, and I'm sure to replace it at some point. However, I guess I got lucky and mine has been rock solid. When budget allows I may get a new psu, but this is all near future anyways. Thanks for the extra info on the issues it's historically had.

I like it, why not a non-reference 480?  Might get better cooling.  Not sure on Microcenters stock on cards, though.

I never get why people spend $300 on a motherboard. Spend $200 on one, and get a PSU so when you overclock, you don't mess your system up from that crap PSU.

I second getting a cheaper motherboard. There's no reason to spend more on the motherboard than the processor, at least not an i7. I'd probably have a hard time spending more than the price of an i3 on a motherboard for an i3. You can get an Asus Z170-A for half the cost and use the remainder to buy a new power supply. Also, RAM is one of the worst places to spend extra money. I'd rather get this for $67, this for $72, or this for $72.25. If you absolutely must get a 3200 MHz kit, this is $73.

I chose the motherboard I did based on reviews and specs, but I admit it is a bit pricier than I probably need. So I looked at the provided links and compared specs. I think I decided to go with the Asrock one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157631 for $179. It has plenty of features and all the ports I'd actually use, good VRM, decent reviews overall (pros give it a thumbs up, buyers are mixed).

As for ram, I did the same deal and just compared the suggestions here. Moved my decision to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820231941 for $75. CL is higher stock than the others, but I'm sure I can tighten that. This set gets good reviews in most places I looked up.

I chose the gpu I did for the 8gb variant since a lot of games I run are mod heavy and I have easily maxed out the 3gb on my current card on medium settings in a few games. Would be nice to be able to float up to the 5gb mark on high/ultra with the same mods. My local Microcenter is great on keeping stock and has had 2-4 in stock most times I've looked. Has 4 RX 480 in stock right now. 2 Sapphire and 2 XFX, both 8GB.

At the time I first purchased my current psu, it got great ratings lol. Of course time showed that product line to have its issues, but thankfully I have been solid. I DO plan to upgrade however, and the one linked looks like a good candidate. I haven't looked into PSUs as of yet though, so I'll check out the state of affairs and see what's out there. I'll also have to see what my new power requirements will actually be. I like to give myself a little extra room to grow and add trinkets and such. Doubt I'll do multi-gpu though.

So, new build would be:
CPU - Intel 6700K $299( http://www.microcenter.com/product/451883/Core_i7-6700K_40GHz_LGA_1151_Boxed_Processor )
Mobo - ASRock Z170 Extreme6 $179 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157631 )
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws V 16gb 8x2 $75 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820231941 )
GPU - Sapphire RX480 8GB $250 ( http://www.microcenter.com/product/466260/Radeon_RX_480_8GB_GDDR5_PCIe_Video_Card )
PSU - Corsair 750W $100 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139142 )

New total cost = $905 + tax ; This is $65 less than before AND includes a new power supply.

Don't buy a reference RX 480, get a custom cooled one.

I've considered a custom cooled one, but that adds on to the price. Does the 480 really have that big a heat issue to warrant the custom cooled ones? Looking into it now, but I figured I could probably just replace it on my own at a later time if needed.
