Thoughts and review on new build. - Page 2

Your PSU has been terrible from day one it is not something which has just shown up over time
Sory to tell you but it was crap when it was new it was crap while you had it and its still crap

Ripple suppression is just barely ATX specifications and is at least 5 times worse then the Corsair RMx or the EVGA SuperNova G2.

Although the vast majority in that case may have been true, not every single one was bad and killed parts, or my system would have died a long time ago. Tone down the anti-CM psu hate a bit. We all get the point, you don't like it and it's got a bad rap... mine is fine. After almost 5 years, I'd say it's outlived the negative legacy behind it by a fair amount.

At this point, the main reason I'm now planning on getting a new PSU is simply due to age of my current one.

Cooler Master does not make any of the units they sell if you are not already aware so the brand has nothing to do with how good or bad it is
And criticism is not hate or bashing when it points out flaws

Only reason why you had not had any damage done to your hardware is you have not loaded the PSU high enough
Last and yes every one of the Cooler Master Silent Gold Pro series are rubbish as every review of them have shown.

310 for a motherboard. No way. Too expensive. If you still want a white- style motherboard, get the z170 krait. Its 100 bucks cheaper and will do the same as the asus motherboard.

Last and yes every one of the Cooler Master Silent Gold Pro series are rubbish as every review of them have shown.

Seriously, take it elsewhere. Not every single PSU in this line was bad. And not every single review says as much. I found numerous that said it was great and the model I had won numerous award. I know that CM doesn't make its own, don't care since in this case you just won't let up. Mine. Is. Fine. I haven't put it 100% load because I purchased it with growth in mind that I later decided wasn't needed. I've put maybe 600W on it total... doesn't change that 5 years on its still trucking.

Please, this thread is not meant for that sort of thing. Let keep it on point. Last post included my revised build idea after more research and being led to other avenues. Most of this research is done in spare time at work, so it's not like i'm spending hours reading up on parts this time. Who knows, by the time I actually build this, there could be other deals out there. I'll probably get the RAM first since it's cheap, and then set aside money for Black Friday deals for the rest.

Yes, I've tried a reference RX 480 and it was noisy in 3D and hit 85C.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/23.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/28.html

Even in idle it was easily the loudest component in my rig (but OK, I'm using semi passive PSU and 5V noctua's, no HDDs).

A (good) custom RX 480 is 10dB less under load, and that is alot. It has lower temps too:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/22.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/27.html

Passive fans in idle and performance is 5-6% better than reference.

you're asking for thoughts and review on new build.

There's proof and tests about the quality of that power supply and it has been given to you. The fact that you're used that power supply for 5 years without issue means nothing. Any product with bad reviews can last a certain amount of time, it does not mean all will die right away.

Ripple suppression is just barely ATX specifications and is at least 5 times worse then the Corsair RMx or the EVGA SuperNova G2.

I don't want my thread derailed anymore about it really. No point. I heard his comments but his tone is what got to me. He really hates that psu, got it, but his opinion is not definitive fact, and as much negative he can find, I can find positive. Still a moot point in this case. I've heard his points and everyone else's, and had zero problems with anyone else.

I'll probably make a build thread once I get down to it since I'm planning to mod my case as well, just hammering down my options on components. So far, seems like I've improved my build choice quite a bit unless there are any other thoughts.

Didn't realize there was that big a difference. I may just have to set aside the extra $40 when it's time and go for it. I did it for the Windforce 3 7950 back in the day, so why not I guess lol

You actually missed shilka's most important point:

That would just be foolish so please get rid of that old Cooler Master.
It would be sad to find out that your PSU that managed to stay alive all of these years with a particular hardware configuration flipped it's lid and burnt out, I dunno, your motherboard and GPU, since the RX 480 is outside of spec, for example, when changing to a new configuration that will introduce your PSU to power it's unfamiliar with.
