Thinking about upgrading video cards. Looking for input on which option to go with if I'm keeping the rest of my rig intact.

To start off with, my current rig seems to be aging fairly well. Granted, I don't do competitive PC gaming anymore - most of my FPS time is still spent in Destiny. That being said, I'm still looking at upgrading from my current GTX 660 Ti SLI setup to a single card setup and moving those cards into my daughter's rig to replace her very old GTS 450 cards.

All the details on my rig are in the signature, below, but basics are 3770k at 4.5ghz, 16gb RAM, Qnix 2710 monitor.

I'm currently considering:

EVGA GTX 1070 Founders Edition
EVGA GTX 1080 Founders Edition
RX 480 (Brand not decided upon yet - need a DVI-D connection due to the monitor I have or a DVI to DisplayPort adapter if I want to get a reference design card, which has a better fan configuration for my Raven RV-02 case with its rotated motherboard design)

Given the rest of my system, am I likely to see enough of a performance boost by going with a GTX 1080 over a GTX 1070? Is it worth the extra $250 or so given that the next PC game I'm likely to spend much time on will be Civilization 6? And would the RX 480 be worth waiting for the reference designs to become available again?

Thanks for any feedback!

Personally I would probably go with a 1060 6gb or 1070 if you want a big upgrade.

480's are hardly in stock, and when they are. They sell them at an overpriced rate. So not the best time to pick one up. Plus no DVI-D is a massive bummer, which is a must on any future card I buy. As there are still a lot of people that need that connector for their 1440p monitors. Otherwise an expensive adapter is needed, though if you just have a cheap 1080p 60hz screen. The cheap adapters will work fine, even HDMI to DVI will work out fine.

I don't see the 1080 being worth it over the 1070, unless you are looking to go big.

I'm waiting on Vega, my 290 still is kicking A$$ and taking names.

I used to run a SLI setup, and Honestly don't really care about doing it again. Hate having to ride the driver train

With a QNIX 2710 at 96Hz I'd get the 1070. I bought a 1440/144Hz panel to go with my 1070 and couldn't be happier. biggrin.gifthumb.gif

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll go with the 1070. Only bummer is I need a 6pin to 8pin power adapter which won't match all the custom sleeveing and wiring I did, but oh well...

Hey, what resolution are you running?

Go 1070 either way, awesome at 1080p, great at 1440p
