I don't think we will hit 5ghz. We're to go up 600mhz from max boost clock since Sandy. I think the chips are just losing headroom for the most part. Intel prove me wrong pls.

Kinda expected. It has been known for a while that the next wave will require a different motherboard to accommodate all the new features.

I've hit 5Ghz on Ivy, Haswell, and Skylake.

Getting 5Ghz is slightly easier now I believe.

Sandy doesn't count since that's before intel went to Fin-Fet.

Anyone know when they will release the laptop versions?
It is said that it comes with USB-C native support, so we can finally see more laptops with USB-C charger.

And Sandies have hit 5ghz as well. I'm talking about actually stable 5ghz overclocks that stay 5ghz, and really... 5ghz overclocks anybody can realistically expect.

Overclocks tend to be inflated. People report clocks that are not stable, or they are stable and are not stable later.

It will have a bit better IPC and higher clock but also it will overclock worse than Skylake. We can expect new Z270 motherboards in about 1-2 months.

Ivy 3770K delided, 5.1Ghz at 1.52V stable.

Haswell 4670K delidded, 5Ghz stable don't remember voltage.

Skylake 6600K 5Ghz 1.43V stable without delid.

Meanwhile, FX6100 max stable is 4.88Ghz at 1.74V. Not a typo.

Something tells me they have eaten into at least some of the headroom in order to do this.

One thing I'm not clear on. Why is it that the primary metric for evaluating CPUs is headroom? Doesn't the actual performance you get matter most, whether it's through your leet OC skillz or factory stock?

I mean, if they really did release a 5.5 GHz stock, with zero headroom, would people still complain?

Yes.

It's the same mentality behind the 28nm process and AMD cards. People are interested in performance, but, apparently, that's not the single requisite. I'm not saying that's PostalTwinkie's prerogative, but i've seen it a few times in this forum.
