Low FPS in WoW - 970 @ 1440p

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I've been getting 'low' FPS in WoW with my 970 @ 1440p.

Basic specs:
  • GTX 970
  • i5 2500k @ stock
  • 8 GB RAM

When I first got it hooked up I was getting 60-120 consistently, then it dropped to 20-60, which lots of variability. Anyone else seen anything like this?

Thanks - appreciate any help smile.gif

With the last pre-invasion patch, Blizz added a bunch of new graphical settings and bigger ground detail, view distance, environment detail sliders that now go up to 10. After the patch, WoW tries to set default values but they are way off. Try tweaking those and see what happens. WoW still tends to load up one core and bottlenecks itself. That is now a much bigger problem with the new settings. You can see it when you open up Resource Monitor in Windows and look at your core/thread usage. Lower those settings, especially view distance and ground detail, until one CPU core isn't maxed. If your GPU isn't sitting at say 95%+ usage, your CPU can't keep up and you need to lower the settings that rely on the cpu.

Thanks so much!

Here's a strange experience:
  1. Seeing low performance, high GPU utilization generally, like in the attached screenshot of GPU-Z
  2. I rolled back the driver last night, and and saw a huge boost; generally 60-80% utilization and much higher performance
  3. Log in today, back to the bad performance / high utilization (don't think driver changed)

it's wow banging the single core on your cpu then causing the gpu to wait causing your fps to tank... happens to everyone.

6.1 shadows are just garbage for fps.  Turn them off.  Also like above said, WoW max out 1 core then bleeds to the rest.  Pretty sure wow as a Draw call bottleneck.

But your 2500k at 5ghz.
