Does GPU fan works if CPU is burned?

Thread Starter
So today I tested some old hardware to see if it works or not, more precisely an Athlon 64X2 3600+ and a GT520 on a M2N SLi DELUXE, the last time I used the Athlon to test another mobo some VRMs got burned biggrinsmiley.gif
Is there any chance that the CPU got burned by the blown VRMs? and if so that means that the CPU fan doesnt power up? If I put it on some other 3-pin fan connector it works fine but on the CPU_FAN it doesnt power, same for the tiny fan the GPU has, is the CPU needed for the GPU to power up?

Thank you guys and sorry for the bad english!

The CPU and GPU fans can still spin with a broken CPU, yes. It's the motherboard that controls the fans during boot.

So does that mean a broken CPU fan slot?
And if so why the GPU fan doesnt power?

It could be a wide range of things. There's a good chance the your motherboard has a direct connection between the 12V ATX power and the fan-connector. This could very well be a dead mobo or simply a shorting problem.

As for the GPU fan: this could very well be a broken graphics card, a defective fan, or something else.

Diagnostics:
Clear your CMOS
Unplug everything from your system. Try to boot with only the CPU, motherboard and RAM (and if your motherboard doesn't have an onboard graphics chip, also the GPU), outside of the case.

Ok so I tried taking the stuff out of the case and when I tried firing it up with a screwdriver some sparks came out but nothing really changed, test HDD is an old IDE WD but powers up alright...
I asked a friend if he has any CPUs to test it again, il check it out one more time just to be sure biggrin.gif
