2017 for GV100 is known from years :

Finally, Summit is expected to come online in 2017, with trials and qualifications leading up to the machine being opened to users in 2018

For Volta desktop, we'll have to wait 2018 and it's normal, a wild Pascal just appeared and 1080Ti is not even there.

So if it's Nvidia, then 2H 2017 according to you means December 2017, not Oct, Nov, or Dec 2017. And actually slipping to 1H 2018.

But if it's AMD saying 1H 2017, like in the other thread, then that really means Jan 2017.

Got it. thumb.gif

Are you on AMD's payroll?

Obviously you've never heard of financial year. Each corporation maintains a different 'year' akin to a school year. A school year doesn't start on January first and ends on December 31st, it starts in September and ends in July usually.

They don't use financial year when talking about release window.

I must have read a different thread, as that's not what I took from members opinions.

More along the lines of rip AMD

He didn't say he speculated, just "as speculated". Which is a very true statement, as 2017 is/was generally thought to be the year.

The big question for me is, going forward is Nvida going to be making 2 seperate big chips like they do now with GP100 and GP102, or is that just temporary while yields and price for HBM2 come down and then go back to 1 big chip for both compute side and consumer side.

That is really going to depend on how they are going to design the tesla cards.
Previously tesla cards were pretty similar in design to the geforce ones, but the new pascal has changed that a bit. The GP100 isn't as similar to the GP102, so it could be that if volta is being used the same, GV100 and GV102 are going to exist.

I am interested to know if the next top end cards will finally utilise HBM2 or nvidia are going to stick with gddr5x until PCIE4 comes out and enough bandwidth and GPU power comes to really require that much fast memory.

Volta is pretty much confirmed to be an HBM2 capable card. Improvements in HBM2 are reducing the number of components needed for a given ram size. But the real fun is that HBM2 cards can operate regular ram stacks.

GDDR6 is on the horizon but more like 2020 horizon.

This all gets really odd due to GDDR5x, because it allows 512bit interface that is sufficiently fast for regular chip layouts. HBM is also a 512bit interface to the GPU (8x 64bit controllers) at a much higher local speed on the interposer. So technically its possible to make two different substrates and two different chips with different 64bit controllers to keep the actual chip design very similar.

Should be fun to see what happens when Vega comes out.
So i was thinking when you all believe the Volta line up be released?

I personally think it will be released real close to Vega. The reason i think this is because Nvidias line up is already pretty fleshed out (minus a 1080Ti) and im pretty confident that if Vega is anywhere near as high end as they claim it to be Nvidia will respond but how could they do that with an already full Pascal lineup? Sure they could launch a 1080ti but what if the rest of the vega lineup is better performing than the 1080/1070's ? do they make 1085's and 1075's? That doesnt seem anything like they would do. Hence why I think volta will be here a lot sooner.

Personally considering how similar pascal is to maxwell architecturally i honestly think that pascal was just a stopgap til hbm2 yields were high enough to be used in other things besides high end compute gpus.
