r9 290 now not working in 16x pci-e slot.

Hi, I recently decided to watercool my PC for the first time because i have always wanted to and to reduce noise from GPU. I have a MSI R9 290 Gaming 4gb, which some GPU blocks seem to have trouble fitting, but found a Watercool HEATKILLER® GPU-X³ that appears to fit the card.

I installed my new custom loop without a hitch but when i booted for the first time i was faced with a black screen. Attempted to boot off my onboard graphics, which gives an output but crashes at windows 10 log in. Drained my loop and pulled out components to try and trouble shoot, and found that my GPU would boot when in the 4x PCI-E lane, and appears fully functional - but this is not a solution because using the 4x slot it will not fit in my case.

Tried with my old GPU, and it is able to work happily in my 16x PCI-E lane.

I have spent 3 hours trawling the web to try and find an explanation and solution but have found nothing that helps.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem actually is and any possible solutions?

System Specs
Gigabyte z77-D3H
Core i5 3570k
MSI R9 290 Gaming.

Only thing i could think of (which is one issue ive dealt with on my ram, but electrical connections are all the same), id check to see if you have a bad contact or some crud on the pcie connection on the card. Its worth a shot, other reason i could think of is if the card wasnt fully seated in the 16x slot.

Are you running multiple monitors? Possible driver conflict from old graphic card compared to R9 290?

Yes i normally have 2 monitors, but i am troubleshooting using only one at the moment - But both my R9 290 and my old GPU (R7870) are using the same monitor connections when i try both so it seems unlikely to be that

Ahh okay, thats exactly what I was going to recommend. I had a similar issue when changing my GPU before but I had all my monitors plugged in and would get a black screen. I had to launch from one, adjust the settings and drivers, restart, and then hook up the other monitors.

Ok i have seemingly made this much much worse. I tried flashing my bios, since it showed i was using "F8", downloaded "F22" and flashed the bios, seemed successful - clicked to restart the system, and now my PC will not post, just tries to turn on for about 1 second, then turns off again and then back on 2-3 seconds later.

So confused when the system was working flawlessly for 2 years and i had no issues installing my watercooling loop. >_<.

Guess you didn't read what i wrote before but fair enough.

If a system reboots without posting and it was working before, try reseating your ram. Check all the ram pins to see if any have corrosion, any dirt, smudge wtv. Even if a drop of water got on the pcie connection on the card or on the ram its enough to cause issues. I went thru this exact same boot loop thing a few months ago.

Worth a shot.
