No Man's Sky was without a doubt, one of the most anticipated games of this year. After many months of delay, the spcae-exploration title finally released earlier this month - and things are not going well.
Although No Man's Sky delivered on its promise of 18 quintillion explorable planets, it seems that a lack of a real story as well as variation in core gameplay has put off a lot of gamers, as the amount of active players has fallen dramatically after less than 2 weeks.
Every game experiences the sharp drop off after launch. I have no idea how much this one compares to other games, but without such a comparison, this is just click bait.

Honestly this game appears to be easy to mod. I am just waiting to see what modders will do with this game. I bet there will be bootleg multiplayer servers up within a year or two (if HG doesn't actually add it) and most of the features that people wanted will be added by modders as well. I am enjoying the game a lot more now with the mods that are available. It still will not ever be worth $60 though.
This is no surprise, even if someone liked this game and can live with all of those extreme performance issues, there is just not much to do in this game and it certainly isn't a long term game. Negative reviews and poor performance is also not something that helps with getting new players. Hype train took this game as far as it could.
Right. There just isn't anything to do. No story and very little motivation to do much of anything other than gaining credits to buy....stuff.
Once you've visited a few planets, you start to see how it really is all the same from planet to planet. The exact same. Just different concentrations of these things.
Bleh. Major disappointment.
However, there is a fantastic shell to support a possibly excellent and rich game. That's just not what is there. At all. Hopefully solid mod support is available and good mods come out. It needs it, desperately.
I had high hopes for this game. Sad really, it could have been so much better. It still can be great if the developer would finish what they started/promised
its not a BAD game, but its not a $60US AAA game, feels like an alpha or beta release at best.

PC Gamer did an article on it with some comparisons. The problem is that the article is biased, starting with the title and comparing No Man's Sky, a game whose scope should have held people playing for longer, with completely unrelated genres. They do admit to this in the article, but still insist in making the comparison and putting a hint to that in the title.
But worst of all, they think that it's legitimate to compare one month player drop statistics from other games with the less than two weeks drop from No Man's Sky. Maybe it's safer from them to do the worthless comparison now, because by the end of the first month the picture may be a lot worse.
A few hours ago I went to check how the game was doing on GOG. I browsed the Popular list on the front page and nothing. I clicked to load more, nothing. And again and again and again, etc, until I had a list with the one thousand most popular games on GOG. No Man's Sky isn't in it. I did find a few older games that I had no idea were on GOG, so I guess all that clicking was useful.
On Steam it has dropped from the top ten sales list, on the player stats it hovers around position 20 (currently 18) with the peak number of players now at 16,511 whereas less than a day and a half ago the peak was at 22,936.
Finally, with 52k+ reviews the game now has more negative than positive ones (49%).
With the game on a downward spiral in terms of sales charts, number of players and negative reviews now being the majority on Steam, I'd say that people should only expect the rest of the bugs to be fixed and then the freighters and base building that they promised specifically. At this point, and with all the silence from the developer, either Sean Murray makes a very comprehensive and honest communication of what went wrong to try to win back some of the player base instead of pretending that nothing happened and that nobody is asking questions, or he and his team can prepare to pack their bags and start the long desert crossing until they release the next game, which will be under even greater scrutiny.
so in other words Sean Murray is the "new" Peter molyneux. Promises the sky but only gives the ground floor
