[TheTelegraph]WhatsApp is now sharing your phone number with Facebook - here's how to stop it

The messaging app’s new privacy policy, published on Thursday, gives it permission to connect Facebook accounts to WhatsApp accounts for the first time. This will give Facebook more data about users, allowing the social network to suggest phone contacts as friends, but may spark privacy concerns.

Basically whatsapp are backing out of their word that they will always be independent and won't share information, mainly because Facebook things it is time that they get some of that billions worth.
Quote:
It will also pave the way for business accounts on WhatsApp. The app wants to become a portal for customer service, allowing airlines to contact users about delayed flights or banks to warn them about fraudulent transactions, but the current privacy policy prevents this.

I'm not sure though what sharing information with Facebook has to do with allowing to link account to third party in order to get information.
I'm not giving my Facebook information to my bank account manager.

Anyway article also specify how to opt out (if it actually opts out).

Yea if you use Facebook on your phone, they most likely already have your phone number, whether you gave it or authorized it or not.

Yes, I know the concern is more for WhatsApp users that might not use Facebook at all, I was just pointing out that this shouldn't really be a big surprise to Facebook users.

It seems that the opt out to share account information to not receive ads and friend recommendations on Facebook based on WhatsApp usage is only for "existing users", and even if you opt-out:
Quote:
The Facebook family of companies will still receive and use this information for other purposes such as improving infrastructure and delivery systems, understanding how our services or theirs are used, securing systems, and fighting spam, abuse, or infringement activities.

https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/general/26000016

Also, they make a cunning use of language in the Privacy notice (see screenshots in the link above) if you chose to read more by saying that:
Quote:
Your chats and phone number will not be shared onto Facebook regardless of this setting.

They want to catch people's attention by putting those words in bold, but the really important part is the "onto" I put in italic. That means they won't share it to your account, not that they won't share your phone number with Facebook, because the phone number is a core part of what makes the "WhatsApp account information" they refer to in the beginning.

Also, remember, Oculus is next.

I presume you're talking about the Oculus comment. In which case you are mostly right (see below). I was more hinting at that statement that Oculus made a few months ago about not delivering Facebook ads yet, but might in the future.

Got this today. Opted out. Everything seems to be fine.

What happens if you don't have facebook and agree?

Not much going on in this thread. Seems like the word microsoft or windows 10 is missing biggrin.gif

Best solution I've seen is to delete both your WhatsApp and Facebook accounts. thumb.gif

Is "Facebook" a Scrapbooking club?
They usually want your phone number just in case there's a cancellation or a last minute switch in theme for the night.
Sometimes it's fun to compare your Rolodex with other members when they're over for tea.

Does this mean that I can now look forward to even more refined personal advertisements?

The algorithms that decide which products are perfect for me can now be cross filtered with my contacts' metadata.
This is even better than the home shopping network (24 hours of commercials a day - how sublime)

Think for me Facebook. Tell me what to buy. Tell me how to make my life better. Please
Oh wait ...

/sarcasm over

My life is already great, and I have NO NEED for ads.
I find algorithms that try to predict what I wish to read annoying and largely useless.
However, I do wish to see the content - e.g. news stories or other media.

Anything that facebook's algorithms select for me, I absolutely do not wish to see.

I take great joy in knowing that I will neither use facebook nor whatsapp.
My data will not profit them.

The erosion of privacy and free will which comes in the name of profit is highly concerning.
The growth of this toxic practice is troublesome and problematic.
