E2200 OC, 400MHz 1:1 FSB Strap not working.

Thread Starter
I'm trying to oc my Pentium E2200 for something to do but I can't get any of the 333 or 400MHz NB straps to post. I'm trying for the 400MHz 1:1 strap so I can oc while keeping the mem oc to a minimum.

Current config:

CPU: E2200 @ 3.5GHz 11x 309MHz FSB 1.55V.
RAM: 2x 512MB D9 DDR2 @ 775MHz 3-3-3-12-36 2T 2.2V, 266MHz 4:5 Strap.
Mobo: Asus P5Q-E

CPU PLL: 1.5V
CPU GTL Reference 0/2: 0.670V
CPU GTL Reference 1/3: 0.670V
FSB Term: 1.2V
NB: 1.1V
NB GTL Reference: 0.670V
SB: 1.1V

Tried up to 1.4V on the FSB Term & NB but still no post.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

1:1 strap has never worked on the P5Q-E. You however want the 2:1 strap which will synchronize the memory and FSB. I would also suggest loosening up the timings on the memory, as 3-3-3-12 is a bit tight for overclocking.

1:1 seemed to work with all my other cpu's so I assumed it would work with this one too.

A 2:1 strap @ 309 FSB would run the ram @ 1236MHz, correct?

Nope, it would run it at 618mhz (309mhz bclock x 2 (2:1 DRAM:FSB) = 618mhz). Keep in mind with these, all of the clocks and straps for the memory and FSB are for the base clocks, not the data rates. So a 1600mhz FSB would be 400mhz Bclock (x4 data rate), and 800mhz DRAM would be 400mhz bclock (x2 data rate).

I think we are on the same page. 309 bclock x 2 (1:2 FSB:DRAM) = 618MHz x 2 Data Rate = 1236MHz is what I meant by that.

I don't see why I can't just use 1:1 though since it works with all my other 800 FSB chips. confused.gif Maybe I'll try relaxing the mem timings like you suggested.

K i think I got it wrong here ( i havent screwed around with overclocking my own P5Q-E in a while), and I got a few other things wrong.

The way I have mine set up so that i get that synchronous setup (2:1 FSB:DRAM actually according to CPU-Z) was to set the FSB Strap to Northbridge to 333mhz, then scroll through the DRAM Frequency until I found one that was 2x the FSB Frequency currently set. For mine, this meant (450mhz FSB Frequency > 333mhz FSB Strap > 901mhz DDR memory frequency).

The math is rather weird due to how Asus set it up. For your system, you have it set to 309mhz FSB (x4 quad data rate gets 1236mhz). You want your memory set so that in bios, the DRAM Frequency option given you is half the Quad Data Rate figure, or twice the base FSB value. For your rig at current base clock speed, you are looking for 618mhz for DRAM.

And this time I know I got it right because I booted up my own rig and bounced on into BIOS to look at the settings myself.

EDIT: Looking at CPU-Z now that my C2Q machine is fully booted into windows, my above settings achieve 1:1 according to the CPU-Z memory tab, so definitely follow those (and loosen the timings a bit) and you should get it.

Yeah, it won't work. 333MHz or 400MHz 1:1, timings at 5-5-5-15 with a single stick, FSB Term & NB voltage @ 1.4V, CPU PLL @ 1.6V but still no post. I guess I'll just have to stick with 4:5 or 2:3 for this chip.

Reset the GTL and FSB Term, and PLL voltages to auto, set margin enhancement to compatible, then fiddle around with the clock skew settings at the bottom of the page. Make sure you save your current progress in the OC profiles before you do though.

If push comes to shove I'll post the complete list of all of my settings that enabled me to bounce my way up to 450mhz FSB and 900mhz memory using a Q9400, and maybe you'll be able to work it from there.
