In all seriousness, I have nothing against the term, but whenever somebody uses it, you can tell his experience/research boils down to a few borrowed words, probably from linus tech tips or an equivalent. They'll fear the "snapping" and "acceleration" boogieman, even though the industry has moved past these issues a long time ago. They don't really know what they want or why they want it - they essentially just follow commands on what a good mouse is supposed to be.
Wow that sounds annoying,

Perhaps the new technologies, such as cell phone use, and texting, have been responsible for a lot of this abuse of our language.

It's interesting to note that you mentioned highly qualified people, who should have known better than to fill out a job app, that way.
I suspect that some of the members of this forum know how to speak properly as well, but talk like idiots, just because it's a cool thing to do now.
To them, of course.rolleyes.gif
It's not abuse of language, it's evolution of language. Has happened since the creation of language.
The word "girl" was once a child of either sex. "Meat" used to be all solid foods, like "drink" for all liquid foods. "Guy" used to refer to Guy Fawkes and the effigy of him which was often burned, and was used generally as a term describing a scary person. "Inmate" was a housemate, not a prisoner.
So really, we've been abusing English for centuries. biggrin.gif

You're correct that we have been abusing English for years but that doesn't make it right. Other than new words created to describe new technology, changing word definitions and pronunciations is usually spawned by ignorance or laziness (or both).

wish I could RMA this thread

On a serious note, I think the polling distinctions are the only ones really noteworthy in this thread. There is a general misconception about what exactly "polling" infers and I'm as guilty as anyone for misusing it. Other than that, it's just people being pedantic because they are anally retentive, aren't aware of the existence of colloquial language, or don't understand its use.

The polling distinctions fit into your description just the same way as any other term you keep unnoteworthy.

Also, I agree with Melan, or rather suggest that mods could remove the off-topic linguistics arguments.

I apologize for going off topic and will respect any mods' decision to remove or relocate the off topic posts. Feel free to click on the flag in the lower right area of the off topic post to alert a mod of the problem.

However, in my defense, the topic was not clear to me. I browse the forums by clicking on Forums in the top banner, then New Posts. For me, it is far more efficient than opening each forum and sub-forum looking for new posts. When browsing like that, the actual forum a post is in does not jump out at me since it is in a small font size and is colored blue, which also doesn't jump out at me as well as black because I'm color blind (it appears faded compared to black).

The title of this thread is simply, "Terminology Pet Peeves Thread". Granted, nothing more should be needed since it's in the Mice sub-forum. However, had the thread been titled, "Mouse Terminology Pet Peeves Thread, then there would have been no confusion whatsoever. I'm sure I'm not the only one who browses OCN the way I do.

Well sure, because grip varies from person to person (and between mice). The concept is rough, but that's sort of the point, two extremes and claw in the middle. That's why combining them irks me. The terms should be used alongside hand length/width, finger placement etc. They are merely descriptive tools, but some fixate on them too much. In the end a mouse is either comfortable or not, an archetype doesn't really matter.
it's not a one dimensional thing though

a simple 2d description is with the following variables:
control from palm vs control from finger
how much the fingers are arched

the three archetypes just arbitraily dissects the space of grips

my personal grip falls right into the middle: my fingers are extended like in a "fingertip" grip but a fair portion of my palm touches the base. unlike a claw grip my fingers aren't curled up

I personally don't believe in multiple grips, but rather the type of grip being used is subject to hand size and product design. I have a strong opinion that a lot of "claw" users would be happier with a "larger" product that fills their hand characteristics.
