Upgrade From GTX 970 Suggestions

Thread Starter
I'm on a budget and am tempted to add another GTX 970 to go sli to buy me some more time while on 1080p. Any 970 SLI users out there to give me some recent experiences of how this had turned out for you? Will my i5 4670k become an issue regarding bottleneck? Newer games on max should still keep me below 3.5gb correct? I recently fired up Evolve on max settings and it seemed to push my VRAM to the limits even on 1080p.

Bottom line, is it worth it to mess with gtx 970 sli while sticking with 1080p? No plans to go 1440p anytime soon due to price and current gpu setup, but may like to get a 1080p 144hz monitor in near future as well.

Thanks

I recent went from GTX970 SLI to GTX980Ti. Ultimately I was unhappy with 3.5gb vram, Nvidia being slow to update SLI profiles, or games never supporting SLI. I'll be honest, my benchmark results went down a little but my real world experience is better. I guess my recommendation would be to save for a GTX1070/GTX980Ti or better.

I'm in the same position as you ... do sli (cost about 250 us)

or sell 970 for about 100, and get a 1070 ...450 ???

I'm leaning toward the 1070, but put it off since so many problems

with black screens, stuttering , coil whine with new pascal.

I'm waiting a month or two for fixes.

Sli has it's problems too !

SLI isn't worth it and you definitely need more vram with new games. I'd recommend getting a 980 Ti if you can find one for cheaper than a 1070 (otherwise get a 1070).

I had a 970 and recently bought a 1070. Honestly, I had no issues with VRAM limitations with the 970 at 1080p. Probably in a year, there will be games that will be pushing 6 GB at 1080p.

I personally think a single card is better than SLI, I haven't heard of any technical issues with Pascal since the beta drivers were replaced with real ones.

Thanks everyone. Seeing that I have no issues running the games I play now on 1080p, it sounds like I should just wait until I finally have enough to bump up to 1440p and get a GTX 980ti or 1070 at that time.
