Should I get a 4 core or 6+ core?

My original choice was going to be the 6700k or even the 6600k, but I realized I might be video editing soon, but not for a 8 hour a day professional job. I wanted to be able up to 4K editing in the future, but wasn't sure if a 6700K was enough since I wasn't doing this for a full time job. I only ask because of the bench's in this video.

A 6700K would be just fine, I don't think the X99 platform would be worth the added cost if you're not doing frequent medium to large projects.

X99 to avoid buyer's remorse. Both platforms are good, one is just 50% better at certain tasks. Better safe than sorry, the difference in how much you spend won't be that big, especially if you choose to go with a 5820.

The original choice was the 5820k since people said the 6800k was a smaller margin in terms of price to performance. Truthfully, I wasn't sure about 4K editing and should probably focus around at most 1440p since these videos would be mostly used for YouTube and personal use.

Zen is around the corner, wait and see what type of performance/price for an 8 core.

If noting else Intel will need to drop their prices. 8 core should be your short term goal.

Based on what you said there I would say go with the 6700k. X99 isn't bad at all, and if you haven't purchased anything at Jet.com before you can use one of the many promo's and get a 5820k for around $320 or so. But you could also do the same thing and get a 6700k for cheaper.

Waiting for Zen is an option, but then you might as well wait until Kaby Lake comes too and see what there is. If you need it now though I would say z170+6700k; unless you unfortunately think like me and want a soldered CPU and slightly more lanes (I had a reason for them prior, but not so much now since I sold the 950 pro). Also I chose x99 simply because of the Asus WS mATX board tongue.gif.

Maybe I'll wait then. It isn't needed right at this moment, but I could avoid buyers remorse if I have a little patience. Well it makes sense anyways, I'll get to see what the Zen and hopefully the Vega has to offer. The 7970 scarred me so still hesitant of AMD.

If you get Zen, you can upgrade to Zen+ in a year whereas X99 is EOL

Do you happen to use Adobe Photoshop CC?

Up to 31% faster depending on what other components in system and you should be able to get 11% higher clocks over BD-E
