To delid or not?

Hi guys,

Here is my new setup:

i7 6700K
GTX 970
32GB DDR4
Custom watercooling loop: D5 pump / 240mm slim rad / 120mm rad (slim fan only)

From what I see, the GTX 970 will probably be the limiting factor in games, so I am going to overclock it.

Should I delid the 6700K then? thinking.gif

I guess the answer is no, because the 10-20°C gained with delidding will be put into my quite small loop, thus preventing it to cool the GTX 970 properly if overclocked.

Ideally I should try overclocking the GTX 970 and check the loop efficiency, then improve the CPU cooling if there is room to it. But that will mean disassembling the loop to reach to the CPU (narrow ITX case), that's why I would like to know your opinions before hand.

So, in other words, do you guys think my custom loop will be able to handle an overclocked GTX 970 plus a delidded 6700k?
Or do I better keep a 'warm' CPU in order to cool the GPU better?

Your loop temperature is going to be realtively the same before/after delidding. Delidding isn't changing the power draw of your CPU, it's just allowing the die to be cooled quicker. (Heat is moving slow through Intel's thermal paste, but the heat is still making its way through.) The same amount of heat will be entering the loop in the end.

Your CPU also isn't dumping as much heat (75-100W in games) as your overclocked GPU will (250W.)

I'd say go for the delid.

Thx a lot for pointing that out, makes sense!
I was indeed wrong thinking I could save 10-20°C from entering the loop without delidding... rolleyes.gif

Yeah!
After a razor blade method for an Ivy, vice only for a Broadwell, back to the razor for this one!
