GTX-1X99A SLI-Plus (PCI bandwidth and use of PCI lanes in Pascal SLI setup)

Hello,

Would you kindly help me with my issue here. According to user manual, if I want to use 2 way SLI, I need to use PCI_E1 and PCI_E3.

I did, buy my second GTX-1080 is significantly hotter, because of close proximity and lack of airflow. 84c vs 56c. They just too close to one another. Naturally I don't intend to use more than two cards, but do you think performance will suffer if I'll use PCI_E5 or PCI_E6 instead ?
Is there a good reason why manual is so specific about which slot I should use ? Is it because there is only 8 lanes on PCI_E5 and PCI_E6 ? Would using 24 lanes vs 32 impact performance. Unfortunately I currently only have Nvidia HB SLI bridge and it is not flexible, so I can't test.

Thank you very much for your input, I appreciate it.

I would *guess* that indeed yes, those two (5 & 6) slots only have 8 'lanes' assigned to split between them.

As far as I've ever heard, it's still VERY hard to saturate 3.0 x 8 ... I don't imagine a 1080 is powerful enough to do so. But heck, It only costs you the price of a SLI bridge to find out, so I'd say go for it ... run a buncha benchies first so you can A/B test ... I bet it's identical perf, but I'm not going to say 'I KNOW' that's true. I'd give it a 90% chance, offhand.
