[TH] AMD Likely Skipping 10nm For 7nm, Restructures GlobalFoundries Agreement

Thread Starter
First AMD announces a competitive new line of Zen procs, and now it announces that it is leapfrogging Intel by moving straight to 7nm. Exciting times indeed!

AMD announced that it restructured its Wafer Supply Agreement (WSA) with GlobalFoundries into a five-year contract. On the surface, the renegotiation appears to be a normal bit of strategic maneuvering, but it also indicates that AMD will likely skip the 10nm node and proceed directly to the goodness that is 7nm.
Kaby Lake and Zen will slug it out on the 14nm node, but AMD already has its next-generation Zen+ in the hopper. It is unlikely that 7nm, which appears to be a bit further out on the timeline, will be ready for Zen+. However, the future beyond Zen may find Intel fielding 10nm Cannonlake processors against competing AMD 7nm CPUs.

...so in 2025 we'll see AMD on 7nm?

Where are those 7nm fabs and who is paying the several billion $$ in construction cost for them? Another pipedream by AMD.

Isn't GF's 7nm process more of a naming difference than a significant shrink relative to Intel's 10nm?

hahaha

oh man. you think intel's 14nm is 14nm? lets not start this conversation, lets just say they're both playing games with the name.

Correct. Especially if Intel 14nm vs GF 14nm is anything to go by:

I am not so sure they will be able to do that....
