[USAToday] Walmart to cut 7,000 back-office accounting, invoicing jobs

Walmart plans to shed about 7,000 store accounting and invoicing positions as the company moves to automate those processes, though workers will be offered positions elsewhere in their stores, the company confirmed Thursday.

The big-box retailer's plans affect less than 1% of its U.S. workforce of 1.5 million employees.

The move, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes after the company tested accounting and invoicing automation at about 500 of its nearly 4,600 stores earlier this summer.

The company is implementing automated cash-counting technology at its stores and switching bookkeeping functions from back-office sites at stores to its headquarters in Bentonville, Ark.

You can bet that other companies will follow a similar model, like call centres and companies that provide tech support jobs. Infact, i predict that 50% of the current jobs won't exist in the next 20 years.

I still can't get over the fact that this company has 1.5 million workers. Repositioning workers are better than firing them... although it's about the same...

Bob was hired to count cash, etc... and has done it for years. Then managers tell him to mop floors or quit...

This is a subtle form of downsizing. More PR-friendly.

God help the people who now have to interact with the general public.

This is part of the reason I am happy to be a Database Administrator; we find errors in databases that computers (short of self-aware artificial intelligence) will never be able to do.

It's great for job security. thumb.gif

Why is this on here?

You have a job, and sometimes you lose it. The world does not owe you job security.

It's to highlight the fact that automation jobs will soon be replaced by robots/machines and it's happening already.

If I were a parent, I would tell my kids to find a career that allows them to do one of 3 things.

1. Teach
2. Fix
3. Entertain

These are 3 of the in-demand parts of society that will never be replaced by computers simply because computers can only do what they are programmed to do, and each of the items listed have infinite variables that a computer could never account for.

I agree, but when robots are able to program other robots, then that day will be interesting smile.gif

Don't worry, once AI really takes off and surpasses human intelligence, those who own the AI and automation will simply not hire any employees at all when starting a business.

The government will replace teachers with Microsoft Cortana™ terminals.

Boston Robotics' humanoid repair bots will replace handy-men, plumbers, etc.

AI will control Social Media feeds to enhance marketing.

Movies will be made 100% from CGI libraries, including voices, sound effects, etc.

AI will write movies based off sales data.

Then when the US Federal Government defaults on their debt to China, they enslave and ship US citizens to the Chinese factories that make the automated systems; but not to make the robots, to clean them for $0.05 an hour.
