How to pick a radiator

Thread Starter
I am finally ditching my NH-D14 for watercooling. I have read several guides and watched countless videos, but one thing I need help with is choosing radiators. How thick of a radiator is needed, and what about fins per inch? I am going to be cooling my 4790k and gtx970. I was looking at using these.

This will be going in my Fractal Design R4.

Consider two or three radiators in accordance to your preference and budget.

Look at reviews and when content, go to http://www.overclock.net/t/584302/ocn-water-cooling-club-and-picture-gallery and pose your question on which radiator they would recommend.

Personally, I used two Swiftech MCR220-XP Dual 120MM "EXTREME PERFORMANCE" Radiator Series and one Swiftech MCR320-XP Triple 120MM "EXTREME PERFORMANCE" Radiator Series in my Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (see pics in sig).

Radiators have been working hard for 2.5 years, still cooling like day one and no leaks! They were also practically clean on the inside (when cleaning them, before 1st use).

i've got a pretty similar setup and using the ek radiators. I feel like they are physically bigger than they need to be to look "nicer" so if you are working in confined areas with tight runs, might be better to go with something a bit more low profile. other than that they are great.

If you go with alpha cools, make sure you run some water and clean em out before use. They tend to have a bit more residue inside them than other rads. Still good units though.

Well first you need bigger radiators than you linked. My rule of thumb is to put as much radiator in the case as can fit. Now the problem with the R4 is it doesn't have a lot of support for radiators. I think a 240 is about the most that will fit in the front, which would only be enough for one component if overclocked. If they aren't overclocked then a 240 in front would be barely enough, but you won't get the best performance.

Have you considered another case if your wanting to go full custom loop?

I've thought about another case but I'm happy with the r4. I can get a 280 up top and front if I remove the drive cages. I can get a 140 on the back as well. Do I really need that much radiator to cool two components?

Are you overclocking? There are two easy rules most people go by:

1. 120 rad space per component and one more for each component IF overclocking.

OR

2. 120 rad space per 100watt TDP.

With those rules it's easy to determine how much you will need.

I will be overclocking my cup but not gpu. I will take a look at the tdp of my stuff and go from there. Is alphacool a good brand so should I spend a little more for something else?

Yes alphacool is a good brand. If you can get a 240 in front and then a 120 in the back that should be enough since your only overclocking the CPU.
