Nagging issue with Powercolor PCS 390. Overwhelmingly pungent smell. - Page 2

Open a window or a door, you should not let your room get so hot.

Electricity is cheap in america, AC wouldn't be a bad idea unless on a very limited budget. Especially a windows AC unit if it just for your room.

Most likely it is just Plastic getting hot and putting off a smell, cheap Chinese plastic can do that. Though should not build up to the point where your room has a really bad smell. Though if your room is also getting into the 90f+ area, then air flow in your room is a big problem. Best to keep your door open and maybe a window.

It is kind of odd that it smells like that, though. I had PCS+ 290Xs in crossfire and never had a bad smell. I had bad bearings after a year, but no plastic smells whatsoever.

I'm thinking that if it is a fan issue, you could run the fans at 100% while the card is idling. If you smell it, then it's likely the fans. If it only occurs when there is a load on the card, then something on the PCB is causing it.

The main plastic parts on the card are the fans and the PCB. Everything else is metal. You could take apart the card and inspect it for any issues.

Powercolor does put epoxy on their power phases to reduce coil whine but with that said, mine doesn't smell in any way that is off putting.

I keep my window open all the time. Temperatures during summer regularly exceed 100 degrees for weeks at a time. My room is also west-facing, so I can't do anything about the heat otherwise.

House is also pretty old, so insulation sucks.

My budget is VERY limited, and there's a premium charged with electricity usage past a certain point during the day here.

Yea, I've run the fans at 100% while at idle several times before, and haven't noticed the smell.

Off-gassing epoxy makes sense... but as you said, it's kind of strange then that you don't have the issue.

Could it be because my card was a replacement for an RMA? Had one that was DOA, got it replaced by Newegg within 4 days.

Undervolting the card by -65mv with a core clock speed of 1025 Mhz kind of "solved" that problem.

Card also runs a lot cooler (69C max in-game), with no discernible performance impact.
