[Seeking Alpha] AMD: More Confirmation Of Zen Troubles - Page 4

For some reason I was thinking Orochi was the whole family of cores, but I think the article is right, Orochi is Bulldozer original. Then Vishera was Piledriver, Kaveri was Steamroller, and Carrizo is Excavator.

That makes sense, thanks.  A stock 6900k is i think what 3.2ghz?  And that scores about 1600.  So maybe 1500 at 3ghz?  So if you take into consideration amds slide of the zen being 100% faster then an 8100 both at 3ghz that would put a zen at around 1000 score,  still 50% slower than a 3ghz 6900k.  So it makes me think that video of the 6900k vs the zen used changed source code to some how cripple the 6900k.  But who knows.  Its all speculations right.

The worst part about that is some EU committee which would be happy with enforcing some absurd standard.

PC field still didn't recover from insanity of forbidding of using lead solder. (And about restricting minimum wattage used by PSU. And... well folks, I'd be stockpiling bulbs just in case, these new LED are not suitable for these who are using epileptic pills.)

Honorable mention comes to restricting Fridges. And for restricting vacuum cleaners. (Folks stockpile 1400W ones, these new 300 W and 600 W doesn't cut it out. Or perhaps I should say stockpile quality 1200W - 1500W ones. Quality Miele on sale is typically awesome. One spare is probably enough. One vacuum cleaner and one spare has very likely more durability than EU.)

The nightmarish grammar made reading the article an absolute chore, and for absolutely no benefit. All we've got is a vague bar chart that doesn't actually have any numbers or data attached to it; it's just not a very meaningful comparison without more information. Meanwhile, AMD has also put out slides directly comparing Zen to Excavator, and the first confirmed benchmark of any sort that we've seen (versus the BW-E part) indicated a performance increase commensurate with AMD's slides comparing Zen to Vishera/Excavator. He certainly did go to a lot of trouble with the maths and extrapolations, though, so I'll call it a 'C' as he made a great effort.

Thread Starter
Well we already know from investor slides and comments from AMD themselves that Zen will indeed have a 40% increase in IPC over Excavator:

It's important to note they said Excavator here, and not Orochi, or Piledriver, etc. Excavator has better IPC compared to those architectures.

If this is true, then AMD is right back in the game, and better for all of us. We could be looking at a TRUE 8 core/16 thread CPU with Haswell-level performance for $300-$500, significantly cheaper than the 5960x.

However, again a note of caution, we don't know how high you can clock Zen. Bulldozer had a very long pipeline, allowing for high clocks. But Zen's is shorter. And the manufacturing process quality is unknown (to us). And the engineering samples clocks are not that high.

It could be a case of AMD actually catching Skylake in IPC but not being able to clock as high, hence "only" having Haswell-level performance.

AMD said Zen would be here in 2016 and we're rapidly approaching the end of the year so it won't be long before we find out. This no information sucks lol. I am looking for any new articles I can find as a result wink.gif.

Meh. I'll just wait for the real benchmarks. I'm not expecting a miracle though.

You will be waiting for Zen+, then, which would be the earliest one could reasonably anticipate that level of performance from AMD.
Intel's weak progress shows that they're not afraid of AMD's Zen.

If Zen was true, intel would have to make $200 quad cores and $300 6-8 cores to mach up. Which I don't think will happen.

Im sure intel has moles and is well aware of how good zen will be.

The fact that they overpriced broadwell-e is a good sign.

They are trying to milk the consumer one last time before they will finally have to cut prices and actually compete again instead of having a virtual monopoly like they have now.

Make no mistake, the ludicrous prices on intel's socket 2011 chips the last 5 years has built up a lot of hatred and people will be happy to buy something else as long as it's competitive and not trash like FX line.
