Another Upgrade Recommendations Thread

Thread Starter
Hi all, apologies in advance boring everyone with another upgrade thread -- but... here we go.

Just graduated college and secured a full time job. I now have the newfound freedom of having some disposal income and a bit of extra time on my hands. I haven't been too engaged within the PC building community or keeping up with any news so my knowledge or insights might be a bit dated.

I'm looking at upgrading some of the more major components in my sig rig. I currently have:

  • 2600k at 4.2GHz
  • ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z (Z68 chipset)
  • Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 1866MHz
  • EVGA GTX 670 w/ EK water block
  • Achieva Shimian 27" 1440P Korean Monitor

What I currently use it for:
Some video gaming -- I've played through Fallout 4, but other than that I like to play Battlefield 3 and Starcraft 2.. In general nothing too demanding.

What I want to optimize it for:
Potential 4k gaming
Working from home -- (Everything has to be run off a Lenovo T460 laptop w/ mini DP and HDMI)

I'd like to save some $$ by keeping the 2600k and Asus mobo, I think they still can hold their own -- correct me if I'm wrong. I was just thinking of getting a 1070, slapping a water block on it, and getting a 4k monitor. I was looking at the Dell P2715Q. Not sure if it's the most ideal monitor -- 60hz, large bezels, will 4k look good on 27"...? Any insights there would be appreciated.

Lastly, will I be bottlenecking or not realizing full potential of GPU if I'm still locked to PCI 2.0 on my mobo? I've looked at a few tests and it seems PCI 3.0 does not add a substantial amount of FPS...

Thanks in advance

If you want to game at 4K, you'll be looking at two GTX 1080s. If you want to game at a higher resolution than 1080p, there's always 1440p. I'm personally waiting until mid-range cards can handle 4K with 60+ fps before considering the jump.

Depending on your overclock, your processor might not be a bottleneck. It is worth it for you to upgrade to Skylake, though. PCI-e 3.0 doesn't provide much of an advantage over 2.0, but architectural improvements give the i7-6700K an advantage.

I'd say snag a 1070 and 1080p or 1440p g-sync display, a GTX 1080 can almost hit 60fps in 4k but not super reliably. We haven't gotten to the days of easy 4k gaming just yet tongue.gif

That's not to say it's impossible, it just isn't very cost-efficient quite yet. I'm waiting for the price to make sense before making the move.

I was convinced we were ages away from easily attainable 4k gaming until I saw how (relatively)well the GTX 1080 handles it, interested to see how much closer we get with Volta. Two years ago someone claimed 4k would be the norm in 3 years and I told them they were nuts, still maintain my stance but I am a lot less now sure then I was then.

I don't think it will be the standard, but Volta should bring it more into the mainstream. You also have to look at the cost and capabilities of monitors. I don't have first-hand experience comparing 1440p with a high refresh rate to 4K with a lower refresh rate so I don't know which I would prefer.
