I don't get it. I have a 980ti 1080 and i struggle to maintain 144 fps for my 144hz. If I buy a 1440p monitor I would only get 60 fps, so whats the point in a 1440p 144hz monitor if I would only get 60 fps?
People tend to keep their monitors for longer than other components, and many people also play older games in addition to new ones. Your 980 Ti could easily take a 1440p monitor to 100+ FPS for CS:GO, as an example. So combine the factors. A 1440p 144Hz monitor gives you room to "grow into", just like when your mum made you buy the shoes that were a half-size too big. Now you've somewhere to go if you choose to upgrade your card or add an additional 980 Ti. It also allows you to play modern games at good frames, even pushing beyond 60FPS in many because you won't need to hit the AA options quite as hard as you do with 1080p.
If you're running one 980 Ti, must push at or near 144 frames at all times, and only play new games with max settings and no compromises, then 1080p makes more sense, but IMO that's a bit OCD and the 1440p 144Hz display makes more sense, all things being equal.
