M.2 on Z97

Hey Everyone,

I'm still using a 4790K and am looking at buying an ASROCK Extreme 6 Motherboard. One of the features I like is that it has an "Ultra M.2" slot that uses M Key. My question is that since the 4790K is starved for PCI-e lanes, I want to use SATA M.2 drives in both of the slots, but will this use any of the PCI-e lanes? I have two GTX 980 Ti's in SLI, so, I can't afford to give up any lanes.

I know that sounds dumb because SATA and PCI-e are two different buses, but nothing I've read has been explicit about it. It's just basically said that M Key drives can access four PCI-e lanes.

Thanks for the info!

Runnig SLI, you most likely won't have the lanes for to run one m.2 at 4x speeds, let alone one at 4x and the other at 2x. Unfortunately the manual doesn't specify what slots share lanes. Your GPUs need a minimum of 8x lanes, and if the slots share with either of the GPU slots, then your SLI no longer works. I had to move to x99 platform in order to accommodate SLI + just one m.2 at 4x lanes.
