Skylake ridiculous stock temps

Thread Starter
Hey guys, i have a problem.
I am running a 6700k on a ASUS Z170A MB (it is also in my sig).

This CPU is running at stock speed, except i loaded the XMP profile for my 3000 Ram (which i think auto set a setting called CPU Core Ratio to "Sync all cores", whatever that does...)

I ran this build for about a year without many problems, my air cooler is a Thermalright Macho X2, which is a Thermalright Macho with two slower fans instead of one faster one.
The paste that came with it said chill factor, but it had no number on it so i assume it was chill factor 1.

The other day, i encoded a movie in handbrake and saw in HWmonitor that my CPU hit 92°C. Testing a few times i found that the CPU basically hits 75° after less than 5 seconds and then slowly rises while the cooler stays cool.
I went on to reapply the paste and later removed it and applied a different paste.
This did not change anything, so i ordered arctic MX4 to try that next. i am sure i removed any plastics from the cooler.
I guess my question is: is this even remotely possible? are the readings wrong? i assume this is the fault of the TIM in the chip, but why would anything hit 90°C at stock?

I heard the Intel TIM is terrible but i am definitely not going to delid a CPU to run it at stock speed.

Or is "stock" not what you have after loading a XMP profile?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, it covers quite a bit of topics unfortunately.

Thank you very much for any advice you might have.

This does sound like either a bad contact between the CPU and cooler (which your ruled out, because you remounted) or indeed a bad TIM-job between the IHS and die.
The fact that it doesn't hit 100C instantly means there is some TIM present and some heat exchange, but it's nowhere near what it should be.

I'm afraid your only option would be to RMA (if you don't want to delid).

I'm guessing that max VCore of 1.408V is a large part of your issue. While that's a safe voltage for Skylake, that's going to produce a lot of heat, especially on a chip with hyperthreading. Just for a bit of reference, I'm running an i5-6600K cooled by a Phanteks PH-TC14PE, & when I was running at 4.7GHz, ~1.37VCore (I've since dropped to 4.6GHz & 1.308VCore), I saw around 60C while gaming & around 84C on Prime95. I'm guessing had a run Handbrake, it would have produced temperatures somewhere in between the two. You're running a higher voltage than that on a chip that would likely run 5-10C warmer at the same voltage. I really don't think those temperatures are unexpected.

Do you have a way to check case temperatures? Your case internal temperatures may be slowly rising under use as well, which could explain the slow rise from 75C to 92C. What case are you using, & how are the fans set up in it? Any pictures you can provide?

my case has probably laughable airflow by overclockers standards, but i am a sucker for silence. i have two slow moving intake fans front and bottom and no exhaust fans, the back fan of the CPU cooler blows outside. also all walls are more or less open with these meshes in them.
i just tried another run with the side door open, 88°C and i will bet the cooler was not hotter than 30°C (i was touching it to check). The VCore keeps hovering around 1.34 most of the time though, the 1.4 are only really short spikes.

This is pretty ridiculous, my cooler is rated for 120W and the 6700k is supposed to have 91 including the on board VGA (Which i dont use)?

Well ill get the new paste tomorrow, if that doesnt work ill undervolt it. Can you do that and retain the functionality of all the various throttling modes and power states?
Thanks for your help by the way.

This sounds kinda normal for that combo - 6700k + Handbrake with AVX2 + Motherboard auto-over-volting with the auto-overclock. It's not running exactly stock. While the auto-boost most boards provide seems like a great feature (Sync all cores), it has unintended side effects with AVX2 loads - more (excessive) voltage.

What are the temps when running OCCT without AVX2? And what is the room temp and cooler intake temp? Another mount is never a bad idea and neither would be trying higher speed fans like the 147a or (close your eyes) 143.

Pretty spot on. OP, to make sure everything is running stock with XMP applied, you'll need to do the following:

-Apply XMP
-Change sync all cores to Auto.
-Turn off multicore enhancement if you see it on.
-Apply a -0.001V Vcore offset (to make sure your motherboard is using the stock VID table.)

Okay, thanks everybody.
I did all that (basically all these things were on) and it now runs about 75°C on handbrake which is good enough for me, hopefully it will go down further when the paste arrives.
At least i don't feel like i'm frying my CPU anymore.

I didn't even know that loading the XMP profile overclocked the CPU, but i can already see now that it doesn't put 4.2ghz on all cores at the same time anymore.

On average everything is 0.1W lower than before with a max of 1.328. Can i now just add more negative offset than -0.005 in hopes of getting even lower temps?

Thanks again for your help.
