intel x79 3960x not running at max turbo oc in games

I have overclocked my processor in my x79 rampage 4 gene motherboard to 4.4 ghz with offset voltage. For some reason it will only turbo to 4.4ghz when I test it with prime95. But in games it only runs at 4.2 ghz. I know this isn't a big difference but if I overclock to 4.6, it will still run at 4.2 ghz in games. I want the max speed because I am playing world of warcraft: legion and i hear it is very cpu bound.

Thanks for the help!

Try setting Windows power options to high performance.

I would turn turbo off and set the manual OC to 4.4 I had same issues in some games with my E5-1660 (3960x) I just turned off turbo boost and set my cpu to 4.8ghz. Made big difference.

i had 3970x @ 5ghz (RS ) (and 5.2 ht off).
disable turbo if you need good oc

edit
now my 3970x is at default but still prefer to set it manually to 4ghz

Those things work, I just hate knowing the processor is running at full speed and full voltage all the time. How come you went back to stock settings? I just ordered a gtx 1070 so I dont want it to bottleneck.

3970x was in a custom build in 2012 with custom liquid cooling.
then i installed the cpu in a gaming pc with toy aio cooling and it s hot also at def

Update: so i fixed my problem that was the processor not ramping up to full speed with offset overclocks. I just rolled back to my second latest bios and it works full speed now : ) Using x79 rampage 4 gene
