Do you guys realistically think my CPU is holding my 1070 back enough?

I am still on good old sandybridge using a MSI Z77 Mpower motherboard. While I lack features like PCI-E 3.0 which make no difference for single card usage, i'm pretty content and see no reason to upgrade yet with the current state of stagnation due to lack of competition.

I have a full custom watercooling system with my i7-2600K siting @4.8Ghz I can push it to 5Ghz stable but prefer not to. At my clock-speed do you think my CPU is holding my 1070 back enough to warrant contemplating buying a skylake?

Sig says 2600k... but OP says 2500k... Either way I think you will be OK. Sure, in super intense CPU games (GTA V comes to mind), you might get in certain situations where your CPU can't keep up... but especially since you are running at 4.8-5.0, I think you'll be surprised how well the Sandy Bridge will do.

Edit- Also assuming your monitor is accurate in your sig and you are gaming at 1080p

Yeah I'm an idiot, I keep thinking I have an i5. Thank you for pointing out such a careless mistake on my part.

Yeah I still game at 1080P, however I like to play my games with SSAA, add on textures packs plus having to deal with inefficiently coded game engines. 1070 allows me to maintain a very high min FPS(which is the most important factoring in game play experience) and I never drop below 60FPS.

Heck metro Last light pushes my 1070 hard @1080P

I will be eventually getting a gsync monitor @1440p but as of right now I think they are all junk and massively overpriced.

Yea, I would wait then. 2600k is still a pretty powerful CPU, especially at that OC. That's not to say that a 4790 or 6700 wouldn't be an upgrade... but I wouldn't say that your 2600k at 4.8 is holding your GPU back.

2500K @ 4.5 checking in, no bottlenecks I've noticed and I game @ 3440x1440p. With your OC you shouldn't have any issues with a 1070. I would like to upgrade to skylake as well but I have literally no justifiable reason to do so other than for the sake of upgrading.

The I7 7700k around the corner... btw your 2600k even at 5Ghz bottleneck the 1070 at 1080p on some games..

GTA V & Witcher 3 & BF4 & BF3 & FC4...etc should say at 1440p the performance should be decent on OC'd 2600k..

Ok GTA-V we all know is very CPU intensive. When you mention bottle neck you of course are referring to to potential max frames that the card can render but the CPU can't feed it fast enough. However all those games I get a solid 60FPS. I understand that if I desire more frames is where the CPU bottle neck is going to get me if I am understanding correctly. Bottleneck would only be an issue if I desired more frames beyond 60FPS, but since I can't refresh more than 60hz on my plasma or PC monitor i'm good for the time being until I decided to step up to a higher Res.

Maybe the Digital Foundry videos can help give you an idea if you havent seen them. The OC original Titan X is as fast as your 1070 so they should be pretty relevant to you.

Also, if you have 1600mhz RAM might be an option to get something faster if youre worried about CPU limiting you. Nice article here..

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-is-it-finally-time-to-upgrade-your-core-i5-2500k

Bear in mind that they have looked for games and particular sections of games that really hit the CPU hard to show these differences, and if youre gaming at 60hz you'll probably see no difference at all.
