Pushing the limits on my rig

Hello everyone,

I'm currently running a gaming/working setup and I'd love to push to the limit to see what it can handle.

This is my current spec:

i5-6600k Non Oced running at 3.5GHz
GTX 1070 MSI Armor 8GB no additional OC
Samsung 512Gb SSD
Asus Z170M
16Gb Ram (2x8) Corsair Vengence
PSU CX Corsair 750W
W10 (Yes I know don't judge me)
Integrated Audio card
Storage HHD 1TB
Archive HD 2 TB
All in one Fractal Design R5.

This rigs runs a Dell S2716DG 144hz Gsync main monitor and a Dell U2515H. Note both 1440p.

While I actually work and render with software such as Revit, Rhino 5, Sketchup, Vray plugins, etc what I'm mostly interested in is maxing out videogames. My results so far have no been optimal.

For example I've have not been able to run Overwatch at 144hz with High settings, let alone while having streams/movies playing on my second monitor.
I've been unable to reach stable 100 FPS on Fallout 4 High Settings
Somehow, I suspect it's a CPU bottleneck, Heroes of the Storm gets 70-90 FPS even with low settings.

Ideally I'd like to play at 100~+ FPS stable AAA games while playing streams/movies on my second monitor, so far my MSI Afterburner attempts have no resulted in any significant increase in performance although I have not seen any blackscreen/crashes/artifacts so I have yet to see the limits of my graphic card.

So in conclusion I'd love to hear some experts on the following.

1) Is this setup powerful enough to do what I'm interested in? If not where would you raccomend investments? SLI 1070? 1080? i5 to i7?

2) If it is powerful enough then how would you proceed overclocking CPU/GPU?

3) Would it make sense to switch to a 1080p for my second monitor or is the bulk of the workload coming from the main monitor anyway? Should I then downgrade my main display from 1440p 144hz to 1080 144hz?

4) While I have some experience OC GPUs I have not invested much time OCing CPUs, where would you advise I start and is it really going to make a difference moving from 3.5 to 4.2~ cpu clock when most of the bottleneck comes from the 100% GPU usage I'm seeing in the msi afterburner program? I do see 100% CPU spikes at times I should note.

5) I've been using Firefox for a long time but I'm getting worried about its CPU consumption, sometimes going over 25% for no reason. Chrome seems to suffer from similar issues and even causing ram leaks at times. Edge actually has 64x so I'd love to use it but the lack of addons/extension is beyond unacceptable, I'm not going to visit the Google webpage without my Ublockorigins/Noscripts/EnableHTTPS/ETC let alone the rest of the web. What do you guys use and what has been your experience? Are there any valid alternative light browsers?

Cheers!

Edited for typos.

Mmm it sounds like you just need a second GPU.
you'd want to buy another 1070 and do sli.
it'll make your games run perfect, and the dual gpu setup will free your second screen bottle neck up.

The ONLY thing to worry about is MAYBE you're getting a slowdown/bottleneck from the single cpu,
or maybe its a bus/bandwidth thing. But my knowledge is not great in those areas.

I would bet money that a second gpu would solve all your problems.

If you're short on cash, you could just get a second cheapo gpu. like a used gtx770 off CL and no sli.
You should still be able to gain performance with your gpu rendering, and it would solve your 2nd screen issues.
But your game performance would not improve.

I would start by overclocking both the CPU and GPU, but monitoring the temps while doing so. If you want to get better performance out of what you have, then you should turn your graphic settings down (not resolution) to gain those extra FPS on that 144hz monitor.

So far I've managed to push my gpu quite a bit and my cpu to 4.2 ghz while under 60 C even under stress. I will continue this weekend, thanks for the suggestion about SLI 1070, I'm taking a look at the benchmarks right now.

Cheers

You realize that running Fallout 4 with such FPS means everything will be happening over 1.5X faster right ?
In this game FPS is directly tied to time. Removing the FPS limit will mess up the game.
144Fps would mean well over 2X speed.

Yes I've read about some games having fps tied to gameplay, I did play at 80/90 fps and it actually felt okey. Really though its about using Fallout 4 as a benchmark since I know what I was running before with a Gtx 970/Cpu not oced.

also keep in mind about fps..
if you have a 60hz monitor like I do (31")
you'll never see over 60fps anyways, so who cares?

also i'm pretty sure your multitasking issue is a dual gpu need.
probably what's happening is that windows is just throwing all the gpu resources at one thing and just ignoring the others.

Maybe there's a windows software change that can be made to fix that? idk , google might?
