New Build with 5820K?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm planning a new build that uses the 5820K, a CPU that has been around for a long time now! And actually seems like a better choice over the Broadwell-E 6800K. I use 3DSMax and other CPU intensive applications which I why I'm going for a hex-core.

But this late in the game, is the 5820K a bad choice?

I don't think so. I've been running a 5820k at 4.5ghz/1.275V in my work rig for about two years, and it's been so solid for me. I use it for 3ds max and intense media apps, and is far better for those kinds of tasks than my Skylake build. If you have a budget in mind and the 5820k fits, I think it's still a fine choice.

Late in the game? That processor released two years ago. It's going to be relevant for probably six to eight more years.

Sorry I guess I should of clarified what I meant by that sentence! I definitely wasn't implying the 5820k will be obselete any time soon, what I meant was as the 5820k was realeased 2 years ago, how close are we to Skylake-E? Should I be waiting for that due to how late into the 5820k life I am. If it's more than a few months away I'll stick with the 5820k.

Skylake-X is likely still about a year away.

Me too!

My X99-E WS is from launch. Been rock solid for the past two years! thumb.gif

I had my old 5820K running at 4800 at 1.330V before I upgraded. Really misses that CPU.
I'm running my 5820k on an Asus X99 Sabertooth and loving it. Before that, it was on a Gigabyte GA X99 UD4, and that was great too... same overclock and voltage.

I guess you could wait for Skylake-X, but why? The performance difference is not likely to be worth the wait. Similar to how the i7-6700K doesn't exactly blow away the i7-4790K.
