But this is good news! Thanks for posting this!

There has been reports of that strix bios causing lower performance in other cards. It's never a good idea to crossflash.

I agree with you on that, basically if the cards have anything different on the PCB then it is a bad idea to crossflash BIOS files, but in the case of the Zotac "AMP!" and "AMP! Extreme" cards, the PCBs are identical so there is nothing to worry about.

Although when you look at the ASUS GTX 1080 Strix PCB you can see that it has a vastly different structure versus our Zotac cards:

This is why I was very surprised to hear that an Strix BIOS works on our Zotac cards.

It works on my 1080FE, but nets lower performance.

Not sure about the zotac have performance decrease or not

True, but I am not surprised that it nets lower performance as (for some reason) Nvidia's FE BIOS files have been proven to provide better performance (and power consumption) across the board versus any AIB partners BIOS.

P.S. - Still waiting on my card to arrive. It has been about a week now and the wait is just killing me!

Alright everyone I finally got my card in the mail and got it installed, so with further ado...

Zotac Nvidia GTX 1080 AMP!:

Settings original Bios:

Max boost @2037.5

3Dmark Time Spyscore:
Graphics: 7735
CPU: 3731

Metrics:

Max Fan Speed: 59%
Max TDP: 88.6%
Max VDDC: 1.0620 V

Settings Exteme Bios:
Stock GPU @1771 mem @5400
Max boost @2037.5

3Dmark Time Spyscore:
Graphics: 7704
CPU: 3841

Metrics:
Max GPU Temp: 83C
Max Fan Speed: 53%
Max TDP: 87.8%
Max VDDC: 1.0620 V

For me there was not much of a difference between the two BIOS files performance-wise, most likely due to the card reaching its thermal capacity. However, the fans on the card never went above 60% so I may need to resort to using MSI AB to setup a custom fan curve so the card stays a bit cooler. I think for now I will just stick with using the card with the "Extreme" BIOS applied but I will leave it at stock settings.

EDIT:

After a four hour session of Forza Horizon 3, these were the readings I got on the "Extreme" BIOS: (Ultra Settings at 3440 x 1440p)

Average Core Clock: 1925.5 Mhz
Average GPU Temp: 72.4C
Average Fan Speed: 47%
Average GPU Usage: 61%
Average TDP: 41.8%
Average VDDC: 1.0137 V

I think the Extreme BIOS plays very nicely with our normal "AMP!" edition cards so far!

Enjoy!

Just wondering,

How can it be our cards can not go over 88.6 % TDP.... mine does the same. no matter what overclock i put on it...

My most steady OC with the extreme bios now is 2075 for GPU and 5500 for the mem....
Fan profile reaches 80% @ 80°C but i do not get over 70-74°C while gaming.

Happy with the card. it works like it supposed to...

Next week i am gonna replace the thermal pads and paste... see how the temps react to that.

The 88.6% TDP limit may be a hardware safeguard set into place by Nvidia. Although in my testing of the Extreme BIOS, I was able to reach a max of 87.8% TDP.

Would you mind sharing your OC/Fan Curve/Frequency by Voltage curve in MSI AB as a reference?

Also, be sure to share your before / after results when you swap the thermal pads and paste. If the results are good I may consider doing that as well!

I been using the extreme bios for a week now.

For the curve(ctrl +F in afterburner) i set the following points:

1075mV = 2100 mhz
1081mV = 2117 mhz
These settings will make it throtle back to 2075 or 2088 while gaming (tonight was stable)
rest of the setting is original... will run on these settings all the way... no throtling lower.

Core voltage = 100%
Power Limit = 120%
Temp limit = 83°C
Mem clock = +100

Fan curve:
0° - 40° = 0 rpm,
from 0 rpm @40° i made a straight line to 70°c = 80%

Temps while doing Firestrike and Timespy are 70°C and lower.
While in games it is just a little higher temp but still no higher then 73°C

Time spy score with these settings:
Score: 6898
Graph score: 7654
Cpu: 4424 (running a 3770K @4.4 air.)

I am doing a "quick and dirty" overclock on my card right now. Although I have run into an odd issue. When using the standard method, say +25 on the core, even though I have applied it in MSI AB, it does not appear to actually apply to the card? It appears as though I cannot get the core clock of my card above 2038 Mhz by default. My memory OC is scaling very nicely though!

with either bios you can just go into the msi ab curve, select the 1.093v point and overclock, then press L to lock the card in that specific state

the amp or amp extreme bios has a very high power limit it seems, even with the non-extreme version I don't get any kind of power related throttling
