Whether im connected via ethernet or wifi, my internet speed is slow. My internet package is 200/20, speedtest shows ~12Mbps download. The other devices on my network run fine. The network connection status on my wifi adapter shows 650Mbps. It hasnt always been this slow, but im not sure when it started. Any ideas where i should start looking?

have you checked your speed n duplex settings, sometimes if its on auto negotiation sometimes itll stick you on the lowest setting

Are you sure you're not seeing 12MB/s download?

Im sure it's 12Mbps. Even Steam game downloads are ~1.5MB/s

you said you were using ethernet too and getting the slow speeds, thats why i posted about speed/duplex

are you using 5ghz signal with the adapter?

Utilizes 802.11ac speeds, up to 300 Mbps the 2.4 GHz frequency band or up to 867 Mbps in the 5 GHz frequency band

So, now you need to go further up the line.

What are the settings on your router? How many devices? How much streaming? What are your speeds like when connected directly to your modem? Are there any switches between you and your wireless AP (access point)?

I have the netgear nighthawk ac1900 gateway, and the setting should be stock. I've only setup a password.. At the moment there are only 2 devices connected, my pc and my phone. My speeds for my pc via ethernet is ~12Mbps, and my wife's pc via ethernet is ~230Mbps. My phone speed via 2.4ghz wifi is ~90Mbps.

Run this software: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speedguide_net_tcp_optimizer.html

Me thinks something is broke in your TCP/IP stack.

In fact, wait on running that software.

Open an elevated command prompt, and input the following commands;

Code:

Code:
netsh int ip reset
and

Code:

Code:
netsh winsock reset
It'll prompt you to reboot both times, but you can wait till you've run the second command to reboot.

I tried the cmd prompts, and there was no change. Speedtest still ran ~12Mbps download.

I ran the software after, and the result was still ~12Mbps.

If you use that dongle in your wife's PC is it getting that same speeds?
I realise you note it is the PC but testing the dongle in another PC will isolate it.

In the task manager>>Resource Monitor Network tab how many processes (with Network Activity) are running?

The PC doesn't have uTorrent or any other similar app launching at start up? uToorent by default will launch with windows - I have had to deselect this option numerous times on users PC due to it hogging the network.

In Task Manager>>Startup do you see any unusual apps?

The only other thing it could be is a QoS issue with the router and your current IP Address.

Are you running QoS on the router?

Here are the QoS settings (discussing making them dynamic)
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25598/~/how-do-i-configure-the-dynamic-qos-feature-on-my-nighthawk-router%3F?cid=wmt_netgear_organic
There is no QoS tab on my router settings

Try flush your IP and see if that helps:

ipconfig /flush dns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Yeah, i checked in the Advanced tab. I flused my ip, and still nothing. Im starting to think i may have to just reinstall windows.

I assume you've tried all possible USB ports?

Try using this or a similar software to delete/uninstalling the USB devices.
Disconnect unnecessary devices and then clear all devices and reboot.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Completely uninstall AND delete USB+chipset driver with device manager, reboot and install latest drivers for both. Reboot again and try the connecting and installing the adapter again.

*edit:
If you have issues when using a wired connection as well.. Have you installed any software that affects the network stack or internet browsing in any way? VPN/Proxy/Firewall/Virtualization/etc.

So, we've isolated the fact that it's your PC. What are the USB settings like in the BIOS? Maybe they got flipped to legacy only? It's rare, I know, but wouldn't hurt to check at this point.

EDIT: What happens when you use an Ubuntu Live CD? We're not installing it, just using it to check throughput. We're trying to isolate software from hardware.
