Help me out a little with overclocking?

Thread Starter
So back in August I asked a friend for some thoughts on a new PC. He's an Intel nut and suggested a 1.2k machine in like 5 seconds. My budget was limited so I figured I'd go with reusing my uncle's FX 6300 and some DDR3 RAM, and got myself a GA-78-LMT USB3 motherboard (I can't tell which rev) I wound up accidentally keeping the H60 and figured, well, I want to try overclocking because I'm quite happy with the noise level.

So here's my fustercluck of parts ;
CPU : AMD FX 6300
RAM : 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1333
Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-78 LMT USB3 (Award BIOS, the kind that looks like a plug and play console or something)
CPU Cooler : Corsair H60
Rosewill HIVE 550W

My power usage is about 360 watts with all the parts in total
My current idle temperature is 17 degrees C.

Can someone give me a (fairly) simple walkthrough with overclocking on this? The BIOS is super confusing to me compared to other ones I used in the past.

How far can I get? I'd like to pass 4 GHz, but really go as far as I can.

I also heard VRM throttling was an issue on this board. Any simple ways to reduce? (Spending a little money is an option, as long as the operation itself isn't terribly complicated)

Oh and, howdy, first post here

Use CPUZ to tell mb revision. If revision 6 then I had no luck at all overclocking a 8320e. Rev 5 supposed to be fairly good.

That motherboard has been showing up a lot lately, so hopefully someone can walk you through that bios.

I read the page through on the GIGABYTE website. They brought up that you should properly cool the CPU area before overclocking. What is meant by this? I'm assuming it's the VRMs, and I was considering trying to find a 3-pin fan I could stick on there if/once I can figure out how the process of overclocking with this setup goes.

That said, I really screwed the pooch with this board, I think the max power draw is 125 W meaning any increase in power to the CPU has to fit between 95 and 125 W...

People have had some decent luck with that board revision 5. With an 8 core I may be worried. Not so much with the 6300 @4.0 GHz.

I have the same CPU and motherboard as you and an H80i.
currently running 4.5ghz 24/7 if you need any help ask away smile.gif

Did you have to change anything besides voltage & multiplier? I heard AMD overclocks need a lot of other settings and I can't remember how I did it on my old old old athlon chip...
